Members of Detroit's women's basketball team have a lot to juggle with classes and time spent on the court, but the Titans are taking a break out of their busy schedules during the 2008-09 school year to help out within the community.
Throughout the year, the UDM student-athletes will serve as tutors for grades 4-8 at Gesu Elementary. The Titans will help out in all subjects from reading to writing to math during the elementary students study hour.
Along with these tutoring sessions, there will be an incentive program in place with the Detroit Athletic Department and Gesu Elementary, which will include free tickets to sporting events.
In addition to the year-long initiative at Gesu, the Titans will take part in several one-day volunteer events. Recently, members of Detroit's women's basketball team went to the Academy of Lathrup Village. While there, the Titans demonstrated ball handling and shooting drills to seventh and eighth graders.
The Titans return to the court when they face Michigan State in East Lansing on Nov. 19 with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.
