UDM head men's basketball coach
Ray McCallum recently visited the students at University Prep High School, a charter school located in Detroit.
McCallum talked to the students about the possibilities of playing collegiate sports, including what is expected of each prospective student as they prepare for college. McCallum went over the necessary grades and test scores as well as educated the students on what college coaches look for when recruiting a student-athlete.
He also told them that they are the ones who have to make their dreams come true by working as hard as they can both in and out of the classroom.
“I was just 5-9 and no one was recruiting me early on in my high school career,” said McCallum. “I then got the opportunity to play varsity as a junior because one of our players was academically ineligible. I made the varsity team, but still no one was recruiting me, but I just kept working hard, practiced everyday and went to class, and at the end, I got what I worked so hard for.”
McCallum and the Titans return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 18, when Detroit battles Western Michigan in Kalamazoo at 7:30 p.m. The game can be seen on Fox Sports Detroit, one of five Titan games televised this year.
