UDM will celebrate “Spencer Haywood Night,” honoring one of its all-time great basketball players, when the Titans entertain Aquinas next Wednesday, Dec. 17.
There's special significance in the Titans' foe next week for Haywood, who arrived at U-D in time for the 1968-69 season fresh off of leading the United States to a gold medal at the Mexico City Olympics.
The eventual All-American's first collegiate game was also against Aquinas, 40 years ago. It ended as a 105-40 rout in favor of Detroit, but the game didn't even go the distance. With 6½ minutes remaining in the contest, Haywood swept in for a thunderous dunk – and broke the backboard in the process. With shattered glass everywhere and no replacement goal readily available, the officials declared the game over even with time remaining on the clock.
Haywood went on to set the Titan single season scoring record with 32.1 points per game, a figure that stood fourth in the nation behind legendary Pistol Pete Maravich, Rick Mount and Calvin Murphy. Haywood also led the country with 22.1 rebounds a contest. He left U-D after the season to embark on a highly-successful, 12-year pro career.
Haywood will be honored by UDM for his basketball achievements on Wednesday during a private pre-game reception as well as publically during the game vs. Aquinas. He will also serve as the Titans' guest coach for the evening.
A special Spencer Haywood collector's card will be given to the first 1,000 fans in attendance for a basketball doubleheader at Calihan Hall, as the Titan women take on Morehead State at 5:00 p.m. prior to the men's game.
UDM also offers fans a “Holiday Family Four Pack” package to see both games that night – four tickets, four hotdogs and four soft drinks for just $24. For more information, fans may contact the Titan Ticket Office at (313) 993-1700 or click on the attached flyer.
