Titans' First 2009 Home Game Will Be A "Free for All"

The UDM men's basketball team will open the New Year at Calihan Hall on Jan. 1, 2009 when the Titans host Youngstown State at 1:05 p.m., in an event that will be billed as a "Free for All," meaning all fans get in free.

When the Horizon League game tips off, it will be officially recognized as the first Division I men's basketball game of 2009, with other eight contests all scheduled to start later in the day. Detroit is also the only men's basketball team from Michigan scheduled to play on New Year's Day.

Keeping with its holiday theme, the Titan Athletic Department will sell Bloody Mary beverages in the Titan Club Room as well as offering a non-alcoholic version of the drink for free at the concession stands. Fans can also stop by the main athletic office at any time prior to tip-off for complimentary aspirin and ibuprofen.

The doors will open to the general public at 11:30 a.m. and, since the game is a non-ticketed event, all seating will be general admission. Parking is also free.

"We wanted to have some fun with the fact that we're playing on New Year's Day," said UDM athletic director Keri Gaither. "Hopefully, our loyal fans and season ticket holders will come down to support the team as always, but we thought offering it as a free event might encourage families and basketball fans from the community to check out Detroit Titans basketball."
