Women's Hoops to Host Valparaiso on Saturday

SERIES RECORD

Detroit is 1-3 all-time against Valparaiso and the Crusaders won both meetings last year in their first year in the Horizon League. Valpo claimed a 71-50 victory in Detroit on Jan. 26 and then defeated the Titans by a score of 75-65 in Indiana on Feb. 21. The lone win against the Crusaders for UDM came on Feb. 20, 1989 in Valparaiso, IN (80-72).

ABOUT VALPARAISO

Valpo owns a 6-7 overall record and a 1-2 mark in Horizon League action. The Crusaders head into Saturday's match-up having lost its past two games, including a 54-44 setback at Wright State on Jan. 8. The lone conference win for the Crusaders came on Jan. 3 against Youngstown State by a score of 86-43. Lauren Kenney currently leads Valpo with 12.8 ppg and 8.4 rpg, but has not played the last three games for the Crusaders.

FAMILIAR OPPONENT
Detroit and Valparaiso share one common non-conference opponent this season in Bowling Green. The Crusaders opened up their 2008-09 campaign with a 69-58 win over the visiting Falcons on Nov. 19, while the Titans fell by a score of 72-42 in Ohio on Dec. 3.

DID YOU KNOW?
UDM head coach Autumn Rademacher (1993-97), assistant coach Carrie Banks (1996-00) and graduate assistant Katie Solner (2002-06) combined for 3,617 career points while playing for the Titans.

FAVORITE DAY OF THE WEEK
Thus far this season, Detroit is perfect when playing on Saturday as the Titans own a 4-0 record on this day of the week. The last win for UDM on Saturday was at Loyola on Jan. 3 (71-64).

THREE'S COMPANY
Three Titans have scored in double figures in a single game on six occasions through 13 contests: at Cincinnati (Nov. 14), vs. Georgia (Nov. 22), at Colgate (Nov. 29), at Eastern Michigan (Dec. 20), at Canisius (Dec. 28) and at Loyola (Jan. 3). The double-overtime win at EMU had six Detroit players score in double figures, which stands as a season-high.

START YOUR ENGINES
Two Titans have started every game for Detroit this season in junior Brigid Mulroy and freshman Jalesa Jones. Mulroy is averaging a team-best 11.4 points per game, while Jones has tallied a team-high 53 assists through 13 games.

LAST TIME OUT
After being away from Calihan Hall for the past four games, the Detroit Titans women's basketball team returned on Jan. 8, but UDM was unable to capture its second Horizon League win of the season as the Titans fell by a score of 71-48 to visiting Butler.

Senior Sandi Brown, who scored a team-high nine points, netted a jumper at 16:14, which put the score at 7-2, to help give Detroit its largest lead of the game. Butler came back and knotted the contest at nine less than three minutes later after senior Lade Akande made a lay-up off of an assist from sophomore Brittany Bowen. After the score was tied again at 11, the Titans pushed their lead to five again at the 10:21 mark after senior Zemora Davis dished out a pass to freshman Lauren Allen, who then sank one from long range to put the score at 16-11.

The Bulldogs responded and scored 13 unanswered points, which included three treys to give Butler a 24-16 advantage with just under four minutes remaining. Redshirt freshman Talicia Washington snapped Detroit's 7:36 scoring drought after making a lay-up off of a helper from junior Chanica Hall, but the Titans managed only one more point in the closing minutes for Butler to take a 30-19 lead into the break.

In the second stanza, the closest Detroit would get to the Bulldogs was nine, which happened twice in the opening minutes, the second of which occurred after Allen made a fastbreak lay-up at 18:34 to put the score at 23-32. With just under 10 minutes left, Butler junior Susan Lester, who poured in a game-high 14 points and grabbed a game-best eight rebounds, hit a midrange jumper to give the Bulldogs its largest lead of the game of 26 (29-55).

Detroit shot 38 percent on the night (18-of-47), while Butler was 27-of-61 from the field. The Bulldogs had a 40-24 advantage on the boards, and tallied eight steals to UDM's seven.

WHERE ARE THE TITANS?
As of Jan. 9, junior Brigid Mulroy is 15th among conference peers in scoring average (11.4 ppg), while senior Sandi Brown stood at 17th (11.1 ppg). In addition, Mulroy is ninth in 3-point FG percentage (.378) and third in 3-pointers made (2.2). In addition, freshman Jalesa Jones is tied for third with 3.8 assists per contest.

ANOTHER FIRST
In her first Horizon League game at the helm of the Detroit Titans women's basketball program, head coach Autumn Rademacher notched a 71-64 win at Loyola on Jan. 3.

REBOUNDS A PLENTY
As a team, the Titans had 10 more rebounds than Loyola on Jan. 3, which marks the largest advantage for Detroit in this category thus far this season.

DOUBLE OR NOTHING
Two Titans registered double-doubles against Loyola on Jan. 3 in redshirt freshman Talicia Washington and senior Sandi Brown. Washington scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Brown pulled down a game-high 11 caroms and poured in 12 points.

GIVING TO CHARITY
The Titans made a season-high 22 free throws against Loyola on Jan. 3 and ended with a 67 percent showing from the line. In the final 34 seconds against the Ramblers, Detroit made seven of eight free throw attempts to help secure its first Horizon League victory of the season.

TWO EXTRA SESSIONS
Prior to Detroit's 76-75 double-overtime win at Eastern on Dec. 20, 2008, the last time the Titans played in a double overtime contest was a 107-102 setback to Kentucky on Dec. 28, 1983 in Detroit.

PLENTY OF POINTS
The 76 point showing at Eastern Michigan on Dec. 20 marks the most points the Titans have scored in a single game since a 78-65 victory against Wright State in Detroit on Feb. 19, 2004.

FROM THE FIELD
The Titans shot a season second-best 45 percent from the field at Eastern Michigan on Dec. 20. Detroit's best field goal percentage showing thus far this season was a 48 percent effort against #23 Georgia in Detroit on Nov. 22.

VS. RANKED TEAMS
The Detroit Titans made history on Nov. 22 as UDM defeated #23 Georgia by a score of 70-66 at Calihan Hall. This marked the first time since the conference changed its name to the Horizon League (2001-02) in which the Titans defeated a ranked opponent. UDM now owns a 1-11 mark in this category.

GOING BACK IN TIME
Detroit's win over Southeastern Conference member school, Georgia, was the first win against an SEC school since Nov. 23, 1979 when the Titans defeated Louisiana State by a score of 84-76 in Detroit. Prior to Saturday's victory, the Titans had lost 13 straight to SEC schools.

COACHING DEBUT AT HOME
Autumn Rademacher coached her first game for the Titans on UDM's home court against #23 Georgia and Detroit came out on the winning end, 70-66. Since the start of UDM women's basketball (1977-78), Rademacher and the eight full-time head coaches prior, now own a collective 4-5 record in their coaching debut on Detroit's home court.

DOUBLE TROUBLE
Freshman Lauren Allen collected her first career double-double as she netted a team third-best 13 points and tied for a game-high 11 rebounds against Georgia (Nov. 22). Allen also dished out a team second-best five assists.

DETROIT INKS THREE
UDM head coach Autumn Rademacher announced that three student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Titans, beginning with the 2009-10 season. The signees are: Demeisha Fambro (G, 5-9, Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech), Kassandra Hooten (F, 6-0, Moorhead, MN/Moorhead) and Cherridy Thornton (F, 6-1, Detroit, MI/Frank Cody Senior).

FINAL FOUR IN DETROIT
The University of Detroit Mercy will serve as the host institution for the 2009 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Final Four, which will be held on April 4 & 6, 2009 at Ford Field in Detroit, MI.
