Michael Purdy-Sachs (Port Huron, MI) competed at the Remenyik Open at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL, on Sunday, Oct. 18, and placed sixth out of 81 fencers in the men’s foil.
Purdy-Sachs began the day winning all six of his pool matches, earning a No. 5 seed heading into the direct elimination rounds and earning a second round bye.
In his first three direct elimination matches, Purdy-Sachs recorded decisions of 12-6, 15-7 and 15-6 to advance to the final eight. After falling behind early in his final eight match, Purdy-Sachs scored several quick touches, but was unable to stage a successful comeback, falling 15-6 to the eventual runner-up in the foil.
“It was my first tournament of the season and it was a good place for me to finish,” said Purdy-Sachs. “It was right where I should have finished.”
Purdy-Sachs said that the tournament, traditionally boasting a strong field, was a great place for him to test his current level at.
“It’s good to start off a national event because the competition is very tough,” he added. “But it’s still early and there’s a lot left to do. My goals for the season are still to make the collegiate nationals and finish in the top 16 and to be in the top 32 in the country. I think (Remenyik) was a good indicator that I’m on the right track.”
The Titans will begin their season a bit early, heading to Palo Alto, CA, Nov. 14 for duals against San Diego, Stanford and the California Institute of Technology.
