The Detroit Titan men’s soccer game scheduled for Saturday (Oct. 24) afternoon at Butler University has been postponed, as several members of the UDM squad have been diagnosed with the flu, or flu-like symptoms, in the last 48 hours.
Detroit was slated to take on Horizon League rival Butler at 4:00 p.m. in Indianapolis, but athletic department officials from both institutions agreed it would be ill-advised for the game to take place. The match will be re-scheduled for a date later this season.
“Student-athlete safety and student-athlete welfare are always the highest priority for any program,” said
Keri Gaither, UDM Director of Athletics. “Barry Collier (Butler’s A.D.) and I agreed that it was not in anyone’s best interest to have players out on the field that could possibly put others at risk for getting the flu. Our University is taking the matter very seriously. With more than half of our men's soccer team sick, UDM's Residence Life has moved quickly to isolate and service these students. We are giving the matter our fullest attention.”
The postponement was a precautionary move supported by the League office.
Detroit is currently 3-10-1 (1-4 HL), and Butler is 10-1-1 (3-0-1 HL).
