This week's women's basketball Q&A features senior guard Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian).
What are your expectations for your senior season?
The biggest expectation I have is to win a Horizon League Championship. I want to contribute more than I did last year, become more of a scoring threat, a better defensive player, but those are personal expectations. The overall goal is a Horizon League Championship and it's not going to change throughout the year, that is the end goal.
What are your feelings heading into your last season with the Titans?
It's sad. I have been playing at Calihan Hall for a long time because a good number of high school games were played at this site. I can't believe time has gone by this fast. There is a clock on my time remaining and when there is no time left, it'll be sad. I want to savor every minute I have at Calihan. I want to win every home game. This is home and wouldn't have wanted to play anywhere else.
Do you feel pressure being the lone senior?
There's a little bit of pressure, just because I feel like it is such a cutoff between me and the next oldest person. Tayler (Langham) is not playing right now, so I feel like it's such a dramatic cutoff between me and all of the sophomores. I do feel a bit of pressure trying to keep them in line and especially with the freshmen, they are looking to someone who has been here and I have three years under my belt. The sophomores have played one year, but they are still babies. I feel a lot of pressure to set a good example and to be a strong, composed leader on the floor because I have played here and it is relatively new for a lot of my teammates.
Why did you choose Detroit?
I was given the opportunity to walk-on by former head coach Mickey Barrett. My only other real option was to attend a junior college in Kansas because it was going to be free and I was going to have the chance to play basketball. However, in the last couple months of summer, I received a big academic scholarship here at Detroit and knew that I would be able to play basketball and have a chance to fight and get some playing time.
When did you get a scholarship?
Prior to my junior year.
Who offered you the scholarship?
Coach Rademacher
How did you find out that you were getting a scholarship?
When she (Coach Rademacher) came here, at first, she didn't know I wasn't on scholarship. When she first arrived, she said she would do her best to take care of me and then towards the end of the year, she was unsure whether she was going to be able to offer me any money because of the numbers. However, during the summer, I was at a family party and I got a call from Coach Rad(emacher) and she offered me a scholarship.
Do you have any family ties to Detroit athletics?
My grandfather worked in Detroit's athletic development department and my father walked-on to the men's team for a year. My dad was also an assistant coach and served as interim head coach for a half of a year after the head coach left.
Did your family history at Detroit have any effect on your decision to attend Detroit?
I don't think it did because I didn't get a lot of pressure from my dad at all. All my aunts and uncles on my dad's side went to Detroit and I had heard stories from them about the school, as well as from some of my dad's friends. At the time, I didn't think their opinions were that big of a deal because I didn't see it as they were really trying to push me to do anything. But, the more I think about it, it may have been more subconscious pushing me towards Detroit, but it was not intentional. Literally all of my aunts and uncles had such a good time here and I never heard one bad word said about the school.
Gameday superstitions?
No. I wish I did though because I feel like I get this question a lot. The one thing I do when it's a home game is that I come right back to the gym after our pregame meal and may take a nap in the lockerroom. I just like to spend all day here and to be in the gym.
Is there one opponent that you are looking forward to facing this year?
I'm excited about all the in-state games that we have on the schedule, especially Eastern since it was such a good game last year, so I think that'll be a hard fought battle. All the Michigan teams you want to beat because you want to kind of show up everyone in your state. I'm also excited for the Horizon League games and you always want to beat Green Bay.
What does it mean to you to be a Titan?
I think it's a mentality. It's going out there and giving everything that you have and being successful for it and just not in athletics, but also in the classroom. Being mentally prepared to go out there and do whatever it takes to get the job done and I think that embodies our team pretty well.
Thoughts on Coach Rademacher?
I really can't say an ill word against her because again, she kind of flipped my world around. She saw a potential in me that the previous coaches hadn't seen. So everything that I do and every success that I achieve is just a testament to her in putting some faith in me and knowing that I could come through and do something for her and the program. I wish she and the whole coaching staff had come in here earlier and been here all four years because I feel like my first two years would've been a little different. She was the first person who really gave me the opportunity to play and the first person that had faith in me to be the player that she knew I could be.
What is your most memorable moment in a Titan uniform?
Individually it's probably the Northern Iowa game when I came in the last couple minutes and just shot really well, which led to my starting against DePaul. That was nice because had a lot of friends come in for the game versus DePaul. As a team, it's probably beating Georgia last year. You look at those pictures and you just remember everyone running out on the floor and it kind of gave us a feel of what it would be like to win a championship game. It was a big game. Not that there was a lot of pressure put onto it, but it was such a big name to go against and it was such a big win to get, so that was probably my favorite team experience.
