For the first time in her playing career, senior
Brigid Mulroy (West Bloomfield, MI/Marian) has earned Horizon League Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors for her performance during Detroit's season opening week as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
"I'm excited to get acknowledged by the Horizon League," said Mulroy. "It is just an honor to even be nominated. When we play as hard as we can during the week, everything that comes at the end of the week is just a testament to how our team played as a whole. Had our entire team not played the way we did in both games, there's no way I would've been considered for this honor."
Mulroy averaged 20.5 points on the week, which included a team third-best 14-point effort in Detroit's 74-65 win at Oakland on Friday. Two days later, in Detroit's home opener, she shot 8-of-11 from the field, including 4-of-5 from long range, and made all seven attempts at the line to end with a career-high and game-best 27 points versus #10 Michigan State. The eight made field goals matches her career-high and the seven free throws is a new personal best for Detroit's lone senior.
"I'm thrilled by Brigid's superior performance against Oakland and #10 ranked Michigan State," commented Detroit head women's basketball coach
Autumn Rademacher. "She gives our team confidence and the honor is well deserved."
The last time a Detroit player was tabbed as a conference player of the week was during the 2008-09 campaign when
Sandi Brown earned the honor on March 9.
By virtue of Mulroy's POW selection, she is eligible for the Horizon League Network's “People's Choice” award, which is announced every Thursday afternoon. Please vote for Mulroy at www.horizonleaguenetwork.tv as the polls open Monday afternoon and usually close about 24 hours later.
The Titans look for their second road win this season as Detroit will face Cincinnati at the Fifth Third Arena in Ohio on Saturday, Nov. 21 at 2 p.m.
