UDM head basketball coach Ray McCallum and his team represent one of 12 schools nationwide selected to play in the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer, which began the week of Nov. 9 and continues this weekend.
Not only are the Titans squaring off against Robert Morris, Albany and Alcorn State in the event's Nov. 20-22 rounds in Albany, NY – after having opened the season at California on Nov. 11 in the first round of the event – but they are joining the American Cancer Society in its vision of creating a world with less cancer and more birthdays.
In Michigan this year, more than 53,000 people will be diagnosed with cancer, and 20,450 are expected to die from the disease. For state residents and for all people facing cancer, Coaches vs. Cancer helps the American Cancer Society continue in the progress it is making against this insidious disease.
By playing in the 2K Sports Classic benefitting Coaches vs. Cancer, the Detroit Titans are helping the American Cancer Society achieve its vital mission of saving lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; by helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight.
The Coaches vs. Cancer program, a collaboration between the American Cancer Society and National Association of Basketball Coaches, exists to leverage the strength, community leadership and celebrity status of the nation's basketball coaches, to raise awareness and reduce cancer risk through education programs while raising funds for the American Cancer Society's vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays. Since 1996, the event has raised more than $4.5 million for the benefit of Coaches vs. Cancer.
