Detroit (7-19, 2-14) has dropped three straight, all on the road, but will look to win its fifth BracketBusters game in seven tries. Junior
Thomas Kennedy leads the team in scoring (12.0 ppg.) and rebounding (4.7 rpg.), while junior
Woody Payne is averaging 8.7 ppg., 3.4 rpg., and 3.5 apg.
ABOUT TENNESSEE STATE
Tennessee State, a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, comes into the game on a three game winning streak. Overall, the Tigers are 9-17 on the year and 7-9 in the OVC, where they are eighth in a league that just eight of the 10 teams make the conference tournament.
TSU is coming off a 77-74 victory at Tennessee Tech on Thursday. During their hot streak, the Tigers have actually won all three games away from home with wins over Jacksonville State (80-70) and Austin Peay (88-80).
Sophomore guard Gerald Henderson leads the team in scoring at 17.4 ppg. He is also tallying 4.1 rpg., and 4.0 apg.
Senior Jerrell Houston is second on the team in scoring at 13.4 per game to go with 7.0 boards a contest, which puts him in a tie for first on the team with sophomore Darius Cox. Cox is also the third member of the Tiger team in double figures with 10.1 ppg.
Mark Pittman is the interim head coach for the Tennessee State program, taking over the head job after Cy Alexander was let go on Feb. 6. Pittman has guided the Tigers to a 3-0 mark since the coaching change.
DETROIT VS. TENNESSEE STATE
Saturday's game will be the first career meeting between the two schools.
DETROIT VS. THE OVC
Detroit is 3-2 all-time against the Ohio Valley Conference, with its last game against an OVC member in 2000, a 91-64 triumph over Murray State.
DETROIT VS. THE VOLUNTEER STATE
This will be the 13th career meeting between UDM and a school from Tennessee. The Titans are 8-4 against programs from the Volunteer State, including one of their biggest victories in school history when the red, white and blue upset No. 4 Memphis State, 71-66, on Feb. 28, 1985.
BRACKETBUSTER TITANS
This year's BracketBuster weekend marks the seventh-straight year that Detroit will participate in the event. Detroit is 4-2 all-time in BracketBuster games.
BracketBusters, named because of the success of the teams in NCAA Tournament play, will have a 102-team field this season, with 12 teams from the Mid-American Conference and Colonial Athletic Association in addition to 10 from the Horizon League, Ohio Valley Conference, Missouri Valley Conference and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
As part of the BracketBusters agreement, all 51 home teams will play a “return” game at the home facility of their opponent in November or December of the following season.
ONCE A THIEF, ALWAYS A THIEF
Junior
Woody Payne tied his career-high with six steals at Loyola his last time out. His other six-steal performance came earlier in the season when he had six swipes at Bowling Green. Payne is currently second in the Horizon League with 2.3 steals per game.
WHAT HE DOES BEST
With his six steals at Loyola, Payne reached triple digits in that category and has now 102 career steals. He also has 60 on the year, which is tied for third on the Titans' single season records. If Payne were to average his normal 2.3 steals a game for at least the next four games, he has a chance to challenge for the top spot in UDM history.
