The Detroit Titans men's fencing team chalked up a season-high four wins this past weekend at the Notre Dame Duals in South Bend, Ind. with victories over Michigan State (15-12), Oberlin (19-8), Lawrence (24-3) and California Institute of Technology (15-12).
In UDM's four wins, the foil team, consisting of senior Craig Budzynski (Grand Rapids, MI/Forest Hills), sophomore Brad Coon (Jenison, MI/Hudsonville) and freshman Mike Purdy-Sachs (Port Huron, MI/Home School) posted a combined 35-1 mark going a perfect 9-0 against Lawrence, Cal Tech and Oberlin and 8-1 versus MSU.
The epee squad of junior Dan Bingham (St. Clair Shores, MI/ Fraser - Calvin College) and freshmen Colin Scott (Spruce, MI/Alcona) and Elliott Trombley (Pleasant Ridge, MI/Ferndale) went 8-1 against MSU, Lawrence and Oberlin along with a 7-2 mark versus Cal Tech for a 31-5 overall record.
The sabre team of junior Doug Sollman (Sterling Heights, MI/Stevenson) and sophomores Michael Danelia (Moscow, Russia/West Bloomfield) and Tom Lorenzo (Avon, OH/St. Ignatius) complied a 26-10 overall mark going 9-0 against Oberlin, 7-2 versus Lawrence, 6-3 versus MSU with a 5-4 setback against Cal Tech.
Individually, Budzynski led the Titans going 14-3 on the first day of competition and 10-2 on Sunday for a team-best 24-5 overall mark. Purdy-Sachs followed with an impressive 23-6 overall record highlighted by a 16-1 mark on Saturday. He also went 2-1 against Notre Dame, which is tied with Penn State as the No. 1 ranked team in the nation according to the latest United States Fencing Coaches Association (USFCA) Poll.
“I am happy with our foil team's performance, “said head coach Todd DresselI. “I believe that each member will be able to compete individually for a conference title. As a whole, the entire team continues to improve as the competition gets a lot tougher and I'm very proud of our progress.”
Rounding out the duals, UDM was nipped by Florida (16-11) and Northwestern (16-11) while also falling to Air Force (21-6), No. 1 Notre Dame (21-6), No. 7 Stanford (24-3), and UC San Diego (22-5).
The team returns to South Bend, Ind. for the Midwest Conference Championships held at Notre Dame on Sat.-Sun, Feb. 28-Mar. 1.
