USTFCCCA Women's Release
The University of Detroit Mercy men's and women's track and field team were both named to the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team, announced the organization on Thursday.
The men's team made the list for the seventh-straight year after compiling a 3.448 GPA, a mark that was the highest of all four Horizon League teams on the academic team. The Titans also had the highest GPA of any Division I team in the state of Michigan that was honored as well as the 12th highest GPA in the country, out of the record 110 teams that qualified.
The red, white and blue took 19th place with 578 points at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional back in November. It was Detroit's first top 20 appearance since 1998 as well as its sixth best team score in a regional.
The women received the distinction after recording a 3.155 GPA. It is the first time since 2004 that the women have earned the accolade. UDM was also one of four conference teams as well as programs from the state of Michigan to have the necessary grade and performance requirements. Detroit finished 32nd at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional with 995 points.
For a team to be considered for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team award, they must have competed and compiled a team score at an NCAA Regional Meet. The team must also have a minimum 3.00 team cumulative grade point average.
