Sandi Brown (Toledo, OH/Start) was named to the 2009 All-Horizon League Second Team for her efforts during the 2008-09 women's basketball campaign, as announced by the conference office Sunday evening. The voting was done by the conference head coaches and sports information contacts, as well as members of the media.
Brown becomes the 16th Titan in Detroit women's basketball history to be named to the all-conference second team, dating back to when the league was known as the MCC (1986-87), and it is the 17th time in which a UDM player has earned this honor.
"An All-Conference player is someone who performs at a high level on a consistent basis and is the primary reason for her team's success,” said Detroit head coach
Autumn Rademacher. “
Sandi Brown fits that description perfectly for what we have been able to accomplish this season and we are very proud that she has been recognized as one of the top players in Horizon League."
Brown played in 28 games for the Titans this year and was in the starting line-up 21 times and she closed out the regular season first among teammates and third among conference peers in scoring average (13.0 ppg). Brown scored in double figures 20 times this season, which included a 27-point showing at Youngstown State (Feb. 19) to match her career-high. The 27 points is the highest point total in a single game for a Titan thus far this season.
Brown averaged a team-high and a conference fifth-best 6.7 rebounds per game and pulled down her career-high of 13 caroms against Youngstown State at home on Jan. 24. The Ohio native ended the regular season leading the Titans in scoring on 16 occasions and led or tied for the lead in rebounds 15 times. In addition, Brown registered double figure rebounds five times and collected a team-high four double-doubles on the year.
In addition to scoring and rebounding, Brown closed out the regular season ranked in the top 10 in the Horizon League in five other categories, which include fifth in free throw percentage (.786), sixth in blocked shots (0.8 bpg), sixth in offensive (2.4) and defensive (4.3) rebounds and seventh in steals (2.2 spg).
The last time a Detroit player was named to the All-Horizon League Second Team was Joyce Massey in 2007.
Detroit, seeded eighth, will host #9 Loyola in the first round of the Speedway Horizon League Championship on March 9 at 7 p.m.
