Head coach
Ray McCallum continues to make headway as he retools the UDM men's basketball program with the announcement that
Jason Calliste has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Titans.
“We are excited to get a player of his caliber,” said McCallum. “He is a highly-regarded player who can play both guard positions. He has a real good understanding of the game and, while he can shoot and he can score, he can also make everybody around him better.”
Calliste comes to Detroit after attending Quality Education Academy in Winston-Salem, NC. He averaged 24 points and 11 assists per game for the Fighting Pharoahs, leading the team to a 26-7 mark and a No. 6 ranking in the state. During his final prep season, Calliste squared off against John Wall, one of the top recruits in the nation, and ended the contest with 21 points and seven assists.
A native of Scarborough, ON, Calliste is currently tabbed a four-star recruit by rivals.com as well as the No. 86 overall and 20th-ranked guard in the country. He played his AAU ball for Grassroots Canada and was named the MVP of the 2008 Adidas Super 64 Tournament in Las Vegas after leading the team to the tournament championship. He scored 29 points in the title game lifting his team to become the first Canadian travel ball program to win a major summer AAU title.
“He played against some great competition last year and in AAU and had great success,” said McCallum. “He could have gone to a lot of other programs so it definitely makes a statement that he chose us. He likes the direction of the program and the kids that we have here so we are very excited to get him in a Titan uniform.”
Calliste joins junior college transfer guards
Curtis Eatmon (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Los Osos) and
Lamar Lee (Lafayette, IN/Jefferson) and local standout forward
John Hoskins (Warren, MI/Conner Creek Academy East), who signed with UDM during the early signing period.
