Brittany Horne capped off a great season with a pair of MVP honors as head coach
Guy Murray announced the annual UDM track and field awards. The senior thrower took home the honor for both the indoor and outdoor campaigns.
Horne was the Horizon League outdoor champion in the hammer with a throw of 167'8”, advancing to the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships, where she placed 23rd with a career best 170'7”. She was also runner-up in the shot put at the HL meet with a personal record 44'7” toss, a mark that is fourth in Titan history; and fifth in the discus at 134'1”. Throughout the outdoor season, she would record wins in the hammer at Bucknell (169'8) and Windsor (165'3”) as well as all three throws in the Oakland Dual with a 164'9” hammer, 128'3” discus and a 43'2.25” heave in the shot put.
During the indoor slate, she was the team's top performer week in and out, opening the season with a new weight career mark of 52'8” at Macomb. The Okemos, MI native finished fifth at the Michigan Intercollegiate in both the weight and shot put throwing 49'10” and 42'1”, respectively, and led the team in scoring at the HL indoor championships, placing fourth in the weight (53'10.25”) and fifth in the shot put (40'4”).
The Coach's Award went to
Sequoyia Calhoun for the indoor season and
Tiffany James and
Terricita Thomas in outdoors. Calhoun picked up where she left off as a rookie and developed into a top level performer during her sophomore year. She became just the ninth Titan to break 60 indoors in the 400m finishing second at Grand Valley in 59.90, and was runner-up at the Don Wright Team Challenge in the 300m in 42.58, the fourth best time in school history. At the indoor championships, she went on to claim fourth in the 400m at 57.87, missing UDM indoor record by .03, and ran the lead-off leg of the third-place 4x400m.
James and Thomas share the award for outdoors after both seniors ended their Titan career with great seasons, running a leg on UDM's record-breaking 4x400m that ran a 3:51.33 for third place at the conference championships. James had a Detroit-best split of 55.9 in that race, after anchoring the 4x100m to a fifth-place effort and taking fourth in the 100m (12.60) and fifth in the 200m with a season-best 25.23. She also won the 100m at the Detroit Track and Field Classic in 12.40 and was victorious in the 200m in the Oakland Dual with a 26.13.
Thomas returned to the 800m to close out her career, running on a PR level all season in the 800 and 1500m. She won the 800m at the Detroit Track and Field Classic in 2:24.25 and made the big jump to 2:18.61 at Hillsdale for the sixth best run in Titan history, her first Titan top 10 mark. The Maple Heights, OH native just missed scoring in the conference outdoor 800m championship, running a 2:18.04 for seventh, and then posted a 59.4 carry on the 4x400m to get her first HL plaque. During the season, she also ran a 1500m PR of 5:02.18 at Raleigh, lowering it to 5:01.62 at Bucknell.
Danielle Poulin was given the Student-Athlete award for both the indoor and outdoor season. Poulin graduated with a 3.805 GPA in criminal justice, earning the Jerome Rozycki Criminal Justice Studies Award. In her best season as a Titan, she started the year with a pair of personal records at Macomb, cracking the 50' barrier in the weight (50'1”) and posting a 41'10.75” mark in the shot put. In fact, all but one shot put was better than a previous PR and ended her career eighth on all-time Titan list and ninth in the weight throw. The senior went on to score her first HL points taking fourth in the shot put with a 41'5” toss and was a finalist in the weight finishing seventh with a career best 51'9.25”. She was also a finalist in those two events at the Michigan Intercollegiate taking seventh in both throws with a 41'4.25” and 47'3.75”, respectively. She carried that strong indoor season into outdoors scoring in all three throws at the Horizon League Championships, earning fourth in shot put (41'10”) and discus (136'5”-PR) and fifth in the hammer (151'9”). Her hammer career best of 155'3” gave her sixth at Bucknell and was the tenth best throw in school annals.
Another award sweep was in the Rookie of the Year honor as freshman
Susan Kalkstein took the accolade for both indoor and outdoors. She was an HL triple jump finalist in the indoor championships, finishing eighth at 34'11”, as well as a finalist in the Michigan Intercollegiate triple jump taking seventh with a leap of 35'1”. Her indoor personal record of 35'5” came with a fourth-place effort at the Silverston Invite, which also moved her to the No. 4 spot in Titan history, while earning a career best long jump of 16'8.5” at Grand Valley. In outdoors, she improved to 35'10” in the triple placing seventh at the conference meet as well as running a leg on the fifth place 4x100m. The rookie from New Kensington, PA was also the triple jump runner-up in both UDM home meets at 34'10.25”. She accomplished all this while earning a perfect 4.0 GPA in English literature.
The Most Improved honor was given to
Kristie Ferrans, as the sophomore made great strides after getting healthy in her rookie season. She had indoor PR's at the Horizon League Championships finishing 11th in the 5000m (19:06.75) and 13th in the 3000m (10:56.43), improvements of 88 and 47 seconds, respectively. The Kevin Donner MVP recipient in cross country, she improved her 10,000m career best by 2:40 taking 10th at the conference meet in 39:59.51 and was ninth in the 5000m running a 19:43.04, a 40-second improvement over her freshman race. In the classroom, Ferrans holds a 3.871 GPA in Mathematics.
