With school out for summer recess and families planning their 4th of July weekend, the UDM men's and women's basketball teams were in Northville hosting the first-ever “Detroit Titans Basketball School” at the Hillside Recreation Center.
The four day event, which began last Monday, June 29, and ran to Thursday, July 2, had over 120 kids on hand to learn the fundamentals of basketball from both coaches and players on both programs.
Men's assistant coach
Jay Smith organized the camp and was joined by current Titans
Eugene Blue, Eli Holman, Xavier Keeling, Thomas Kennedy, Woody Payne, Chase Simon and
Eulis Stephens along with recent UDM graduate
Michael Harrington. The women were represented by assistant coaches
Carrie Banks and
Emily Samuelson as well as
Brigid Mulroy and 2009 graduate
Sandi Brown.
The campers went through three hours or practice and drills everyday, learning everything from dribbling techniques to stretching and conditioning. While all 120 kids did come together for instruction, the kids were also broken up into groups where they received lessons from the Titan players.
The campers were amazed by the size and skill of all the student-athletes and were treated to a mini slam dunk competition on the final day, where the kid's cheers made a winner out of Keeling.
“We have had over 700 kids in all of our camps so far, getting to know all of our coaches, seeing our facilities and our campus,” said head men's coach
Ray McCallum. “This is really a win-win situation for everyone and I am glad we have had a great turnout at all of our camps and look forward to seeing more kids come here later this summer.”
The men's team will host two more camps this summer with its second Elite Camp slated for Aug. 15 as well as the
Ray McCallum Basketball Camp from Aug. 3-6. For more information on those camps, please
