The Titan men’s golf team was recognized this week by the Golf Coaches Association of America for having one of the seven highest Division I team grade point averages in the nation for 2008-09.
With a 3.50 team GPA, Detroit was joined by Belmont, East Carolina, East Tennessee State – which was honored for having the highest recorded GPA – Georgia Tech, Rice and Seton Hall in receiving President’s Special Recognition status for earning team GPAs of 3.50 or better. A total of 75 other teams submitted GPAs of 3.00 or higher and earned All-Academic Team recognition.
“This is a great honor for our team,” said Mark Engel, who is entering his 20th season as the Titans’ head coach. “Our team has consistently excelled in the class room while playing some tremendous golf at the same time. This good news is a result of their hard work.”
Senior David Byrne was named an All-America Scholar by the GCAA earlier this summer, while three Titans – Byrne and juniors Jeff Clarridge and Britt Pronk – were voted to the 2009 Horizon League All-Academic Golf Team.
The Titans, who finished second in the Horizon League each of the last two years, open their 2009-10 schedule Sept. 19-20 at the Spartan Classic, hosted by Michigan State.
