There wasn't a dull moment all day as Titans of today, tomorrow and yesterday were on campus Saturday, January 23, to take part in a full schedule of activities during the University of Detroit Mercy's 2010 Homecoming Weekend.
“Homecoming is one of my favorite events throughout the year,” said UDM Director of Athletics
Keri Gaither. “Having the reception for all the alumni, the Hall of Fame induction at halftime of the men's basketball game and then the former student-athlete reception after the game provides a great opportunity for everyone to reconnect. I love being able to catch up with our alumni and hear about their lives and what they're doing.”
Activities kicked off at Calihan Hall bright and early as the fencing team welcomed back four alumni for a fun meet at 9 a.m. Titans head coach
Todd Dressell and assistant coach
Nick Tobianski joined the alumni squad, which prevailed 21-8 over the current crop of Titans.
Over 60 youngsters took to the basketball court at 10 a.m., where assistant men's basketball coach
Jay Smith was joined by current UDM men's and women's basketball players as well as Detroit basketball alumni for a youth clinic. Campers received an hour of instruction and were drilled on fundamentals including passing, shooting, ball-handling and footwork. After going through all their drills Smith and head coach
Ray McCallum took a moment to talk to the future Titans about the importance of academics. A free lunch was provided for all participants, as was a complimentary ticket to the Homecoming basketball game.
The kiddos then gave way to the Titans of yesterday at 11 a.m. for an alumni basketball game. Ten former UDM hoopsters were divided into red and grey teams and faced off for two 12-minute halves in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
“It's great fun to get a free t-shirt and to get to see some of your old friends,” said former Titan
Dan Kennedy, who lit it up from beyond the three-point line during the alumni game. “And you get to come back and play a game in Calihan Hall which is a great place to play a game and see a game.”
There was still one more stop to make before the Titans tipped off against Wright State, at the engineering and science building for the alumni tailgate party and chili cook-off, where a hearty feast and a chance to catch-up with old friends awaited.
Back at Calihan Hall, the Titans tipped off against Wright State at 2 p.m. UDM trailed at halftime, but it didn't take away from the celebratory mood as 10 alumni were inducted into the Titans Sports Hall of Fame in front of a crowd of over 4,100.
Former student-athletes enjoyed one last event in the friendly confines of Calihan Hall at a post-game reception following a heartbreaking loss for the men's basketball team, where the former Titans could continue to enjoy the company of old teammates.
