The University of Detroit Mercy fencing team welcomed back four alumni on Saturday morning, January 23, for another installment of the Titans annual alumni meet amidst the college's Homecoming festivities, and the experienced alumni owned the day, topping the current squad 21-8.
“Age and treachery beats youth and enthusiasm again,” exclaimed UDM head fencing coach
Todd Dressell.
Returning to fence for the alumni included
James Gawecki in the foil,
Maddy Lutz (Gage) and
Brian Boil in the epee, and
William Giovan in the sabre. The alumni were joined by Dressell and Titans assistant coach
Nick Tobianski for the showdown and proved they still know a thing or two about handling their weapons. Gawecki and Lutz each posted 3-1 records, Giovan went 4-2 and Boil finished with a 1-2 mark.
“Everyone had a great time,” said Dressell. “It was great to connect with the alumni and enjoy a morning of fencing fun.”
