216 riders…36 hours…4 causes… Those numbers describe an inaugural special event fundraiser, "Cardio for a Cause," that will get underway on Wednesday morning when Titan men's basketball coach Ray McCallum climbs aboard a stationary bike to raise money for Titan Athletics and three other special charities.
McCallum will be the first of 216 participants, each of whom will pedal for a 10-minute shift on Wednesday and Thursday. The event's final rider, Nate Robertson of the Detroit Tigers, will take the 8:20-8:30 p.m. shift and sign autographs for Titan fans on Thursday at Calihan Hall.
Members of the local media, former Titan athletes (such as Earl Cureton) and other celebrities (including former Red Wing Jason Woolley) are all taking a turn to help support "Cardio for a Cause." Current basketball coaches and players will also participate.
During the final four hours, riders will be participating courtside to generate additional exposure with fans at the men's and women's basketball games. Fans who have not already contributed or sponsored a rider can make a donation in person.
All money raised will go to benefit the Titan Strength and Conditioning program, Children's Hospital of Michigan, the V Foundation for Cancer Research and the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund. Anyone wishing to sponsor a student-athlete, coach or athletics staff member can do so by calling Titan Athletics at (313) 993-1700, or by printing a gift form from our website.
