When you see Ray McCallum and the rest of the Titan coaching staff wearing sneakers on the sidelines of the men’s basketball game against UIC on Saturday, rather than their traditional dress shoes, there’s a good reason – they’re participating in “Suits and Sneakers.”

Suits and Sneakers is a national Coaches vs. Cancer event that is designed to raise awareness about the fight against cancer and the American Cancer Society. It encourages head coaches and their staffs to wear sneakers with their suits at games held this weekend to show support for the Coaches vs. Cancer program.

Coaches vs. Cancer is a collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches to empower basketball coaches, their teams and their communities to save lives from cancer by participating in a variety of national and local events. High school and college coaches from across the country raise awareness and funds to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays. The Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers awareness weekend is a nationwide annual event in which coaches across the country unite for a common cause – fighting cancer. During this weekend, coaches and their staff have been encouraged to wear sneakers with their game suits while coaching games to:

• Raise awareness about the fight against cancer.
• Share the importance of nutrition and physical activity in reducing one’s risk of the disease.
• Promote the American Cancer Society as a place for people facing cancer to turn 24 hours a day, seven days a week for free information, help, and support.

“I’m really delighted we are able to participate,” UDM coach Ray McCallum said. “I’ve been a part of this great cause since its inception. We must bring recognition about this terrible disease that, in some way, has affected all our friends, family and loved ones. Whatever we can do to help find a cure is something I strongly believe in.”
