Box Score

GREEN BAY, Wis. - The Titans finished the regular season with a 1-1 tie at Green Bay and will enter the Horizon League playoffs as the #6 seed. Detroit will head to #3 seed Cleveland State this Sunday for the first round of the conference tournament to be played at noon.

In a wet affair in Green Bay, Detroit (7-6-5/3-3-2 Horizon League) scored first at 70:13 of the second half to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman Kaitlyn Quarrell (Thunder Bay, ON/St. Ignatius) scored a goal on a loose ball in front of the net for her third of the year.

Later in the second frame, a penalty kick was awarded to the Phoenix (3-9-4/1-5-2 HL) and Lauren Somers tied it up at 77:42.

“It was a game we should have won with all the opportunities we had today,” said head coach Mike Lupenec. “Soccer is weird where you can control most of the game and not walk away with a victory.”

Detroit controlled the possession for most of the game holding a 9-3 shooting advantage at the half and a 26-8 shooting advantage (8-5 on net) at the end of regulation. The Titans finished 29-10 in overall shots and had 14 corner kicks in the game to Green Bay's two.

Freshman Abby McCollum (La Salle, MI/Monroe) had a close opportunity to win it for the Titans with a powerful shot in the closing minutes of the second overtime. With 1:40 left in the game, the shot went right at the goalkeeper who made the save. McCollum finished with nine shots in the game.

Freshman goalkeeper Nora Abolins (Demorestville, ON/Centennial) made four saves in net for Detroit.

Elsewhere around the Horizon League, Butler defeated Cleveland State to finish with the same 6-2 conference record as Milwaukee. Butler takes the regular season title by virtue of an earlier 1-0 win at Milwaukee on October 10. Cleveland State finishes with the third seed while the remaining seeds in order are Wright State (4), Loyola (5), and Detroit (6).

The Titans will head to Cleveland State this Sunday for the first round of the Horizon League Tournament.
