The 2010-11 season will officially begin tomorrow as the Detroit women's basketball team opens a three-game homestand with Oakland on Friday at 7:00 p.m., inside Calihan Hall.

The game will be the season opener for both programs.

Fans that can't make the game can catch all the action on the Horizon League Network, with Dan York handling the play-by-play. A live stats feed through gametracker will also be available. Both links are located on top of the page.

The Titans return four starters and nine letterwinners off a team that posted a 17-14 mark and a 14-4 record in conference play in 2010, tying Butler for second place in the league. Detroit would advance all the way to the Horizon League tournament's semifinals. UDM was picked to finish third in the conference's preseason poll, while sophomore Yar Shayok earned preseason second team All-League honors.

Oakland was 17-13 a year, but 14-4 in the Summit League. This season, Oakland was picked to finish third in the Summit League preseason poll, with a pair of All-League selections in sophomore Bethany Watterworth (first team) and junior Brittany Carnago (second team).

Beckie Francis is in her the sixth season as Oakland's head women's basketball coach, though it is her second stint at the school. She also coached there from 1997-2002. Overall, she is in her 11th season with Oakland and her 14th as a collegiate head coach.

Detroit leads the overall series with Oakland, 10-6, including a season-opening 74-65 victory in Rochester Hills last season.

Detroit has also been dominant at home in the series with a 7-2 record in Calihan Hall, though the last time the Golden Grizzlies made the short trip (Dec. 12, 2003), they came away with a 57-45 win.

The match-up is also the third time in program history that the Titans will open up against OU with the other two occasions occurring at Oakland with last year's triumph and a 65-58 setback in 2002.

LAST YEAR'S MEETING
Behind a dominating performance from Yar Shayok, who posted a double-double with game-highs in both rebounds (14) and points (26), Detroit downed Oakland, 74-65, at the O'Rena.

Demeisha Fambro added 17, Brigid Mulroy 14 and Jalesa Jones scored 12 on the night.

The Titans set the tone in the second half as they scored 10 unanswered points in the opening minutes, which included a 3-pointer from Fambro that gave Detroit a 38-36 advantage and a lead that it would not relinquish. UDM then broke the game wide open with a 13-0 run to go out in front, 60-44, with just under eight minutes left.

ABOUT OAKLAND
OU won both of its exhibition games defeating Western Ontario,60-50, and Ferris State, 70-55. The Golden Grizzlies return three starters and six letterwinners from a team that finished 17-13 overall and 14-4 in the Summit League.

This season, Oakland was picked to finish third in the Summit League preseason poll, with a pair of preseason All-League selections in sophomore Bethany Watterworth (first team) and junior Brittany Carnago (second team).

Watterworth averaged 13.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game in 2010 earning All-Summit League second team and All-Newcomer Team honors. Carnago missed the entire 2009-10 season due to an injury, but averaged 9.6 points, 5.3 points and 2.1 assists, while setting the Oakland single-season record with 89 blocks as a sophomore in 2008-09.

FEELING GOOD VS. THE GREAT LAKES STATE
The Titans will be looking for their 95th win against programs from the state of Michigan. Overall, UDM is 94-59 against its stately foes.

AGAINST THE SUMMIT
Detroit has played two teams currently in the Summit League in its history and has posted a 15-6 record verses those clubs. Besides the 10-6 mark against Oakland, the Titans are a perfect 5-0 against IPFW, a team that they will face in December.

SEASON OPENERS
Detroit is entering its 34th season and has a record of 14-19 in season openers.

The Titans are also 16-17 all-time in home openers with the last victory coming on Nov. 22, 2008, when UDM upset No. 23 Georgia, 70-66. Last year, the Titans' home opener was against another big time opponent, but Detroit was downed by Michigan State, 71-62.

The red, white and blue do have a winning record when starting the year at home as Detroit is 8-6 in home season openers.

DÉJÀ VU
For the second year in a row, Detroit played its lone exhibition game against Saginaw Valley and will open the season against Oakland.

WE CALL OUR HOME CALIHAN HALL
In 33 years of play at Calihan Hall, the Titans have enjoyed a 245-134 (.646) home court record. Last season, UDM went 10-6 at home, including 8-1 in conference play.

Detroit will actually start the season with three straight homes games but after that, UDM will not see much of its home court as the Titans will be on the road from Nov. 20 all the way to Dec. 27, a span of seven games, before they play in front of their hometown fans again.
