ON TAP: The Detroit Titans continue their tough non-conference stretch Tuesday when they travel to Syracuse (No. 10 AP/No. 13 Coaches). Detroit is fresh off a 63-54 defeat at New Mexico Saturday and will be looking to give the Orange their first defeat of the season. This game is part of the Legends Classic. Detroit will host a sub-regional of the Classic on Thanksgiving weekend.
MARATHON TELECAST: Tuesday's game is part of ESPN's College Hoops Tip-off Marathon with 21 games airing over a minimum 25.5-hour timespan beginning at midnight Tuesday morning among the ESPN platforms (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3.com). ELI's DOUBLE-DOUBLES: Junior
Eli Holman led the Titans with 15 points and 13 rebounds in Detroit's 63-54 loss at New Mexico Saturday. The big man notched his 11th double-double in a Detroit uniform in just 32 games.
30 for 30: Detroit will be playing its second straight opponent coming off a 30-win campaign. Both New Mexico and Syracuse sported 30-5 records last season. The Lobos were a No. 3 seed in the NCAA tournament while the Orange grabbed a No. 1 seed and fell to eventual national finalist and Horizon League member Butler in the Sweet 16.
QUITE A STRETCH: Detroit will have three of its first four games away from Calihan Hall and all against very formidable opponents. The Titans opened at New Mexico, a No. 3 seed in last season's NCAA tourney and a 30-win team. They then travel back across the country to Syracuse, for a showdown with preseason's No. 13th-ranked Orange. After the home opener on Nov. 19, UDM then heads to Mississippi State on Nov. 22.
THESE RIMS ARE THE "PIT"S: Both teams struggled shooting from the perimeter in Detroit's loss at New Mexico Saturday. UDM hit just 4-of-22 from deep but actually outshot the host Lobos, who made only 3-of-20 from distance.
FOUL TROUBLE: Five different Titans had at least four personal fouls at New Mexico Saturday.
Nick Minnerath fouled out of the contest and fellow starters
Ray McCallum and
Jason Calliste each had four whistles.
Donavan Foster and
LaMarcus Lowe each had four fouls off-the-bench for Detroit, in 22 and eight minutes, respectively.
CAL-LISTE OF OUR WORRIES:
Jason Calliste got hot in the exhibition win over Lake Superior State on Nov. 6. The sophomore hit 8-of-12 three-pointers, including 5-of-6 in the second half. He scored a game-high 34 points in the blowout.
TITANS TO HONOR RASHAD PHILLIPS AT HOME OPENER: Rashad Phillips, University of Detroit Mercy's all-time leading scorer, will be honored prior to the opening tip of the 2010-11 home schedule, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. against Indiana Tech. The hometown standout will have his jersey adorned in the Calihan Hall rafters, joining other Titan greats such as Bob Calihan, Dave DeBusschere, John Long and Terry Tyler. The festivities on Nov. 19 will feature a pre-game ceremony to honor Phillips' accomplishments, both on the hardwood and in the community. His jersey will be honored by being hung from the rafters in Calihan Hall and he will officially pass the No. 3 to current team member freshman
Ray McCallum during a pre-game ceremony. All kids get in FREE to this doubleheader with the purchase of one adult ticket.
