Holman Lifts Titans In Double Overtime Victory 84-82

Box Score

DETROIT—Eli Holman (Richmond, CA, Richmond (Indiana) scored a career-high 27 points and added 15 rebounds as Detroit was able to defeat Albany 84-82 in double overtime.

Albany hit a three pointer at the end of regulation to force overtime, and it was another buzzer beater from behind the arc that sent the game into double overtime for the Great Danes. This game was a battle from start to finish, but in the end it was Detroit picking up their second home win of the year.

Holman led the way with 27 points, yet three other Titans reached double-figure scoring. Chase Simon (Detroit, MI, Community (Central Michigan) came up with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Nick Minnerath (Truro, MA, Nauset (Jackson (MI) Community College) impacted the game with 13 points on the inside. Donavan Foster (Chicago, IL, Curie) came off the bench to score 10 points down the stretch to help Detroit pull out the victory.

The Great Danes hit 14 triples on the night as they ended the game shooting 51 percent from three point range. They shot well in the first half of play taking a three point advantage into halftime. The Great Danes hit nine of their 14 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes of action.

Luke Devlin led the charge early connecting on four of his six three-point attempts. Tim Ambrose filled the box score for Albany with a team-high 18 points. The senior also collected eight rebounds and led the Great Danes with six assists. Both Devlin and Ambrose were on the sideline for the finish of the game as each player picked up five personal fouls.

Holman and Simon accounted for 23 of Detroit's 39 points at the half. Holman gave the Titans an inside presence early with nine points on his way to a career night. Simon slashed his way to the bucket to lead Detroit with 14 points at the break.

It was the duo of Holman and Simon again in the overtime periods stepping up for Detroit. Holman helped the team in a variety of ways as he cleared the lane for a Ray McCallum (Beverly Hills, MI , Detroit Country Day) layup to start the first overtime. The big man also came up with a key assist that led to a Minnerath dunk, and he blocked two shots to help Detroit out on defense.

Holman scored six of the 12 Titan points in the double overtime period. Simon did his part with a three pointer to extend the lead, and Foster got involved with a clutch jumper with the shot clock running out.

The Legends Classic Sub-Regional will continue tomorrow with a matchup between the Titans and the Bowling Green Falcons. Action begins at 7:30 p.m. The Falcons ended day one with a 65-61 loss to Niagara. Albany will also play Niagara in game three of the classic on Saturday afternoon. That game will get underway at 5:00 p.m.

Game Notes: Detroit did not commit a single turnover in the first half… The Titans have lowered their turnover total in each game this season… Seven turnovers is the lowest total since the 2007-08 season when UDM totaled four turnovers against Bowling Green… Holman put together his third double-double of the season… It marks the 14th double-double of his career.
