Titans Take Down Falcons 71-62

DETROIT – The Titans used a total team effort to defeat Bowling Green by the final score of 71-62 on Saturday night at Calihan Hall. All five starters reached double-digit scoring for Detroit.

The Titans are now 3-3 overall with the win. Nick Minnerath (Truro, MA, Nauset (Jackson (MI) Community College) scored a team-high 14 points, and Eli Holman (Richmond, CA, Richmond (Indiana) added 13 while grabbing 11 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.

Both Chase Simon (Detroit, MI, Community (Central Michigan) and Ray McCallum (Beverly Hills, MI , Detroit Country Day) ended the game with 12, while Jason Calliste (Scarborough, ON, Quality Education Academy (NC) rounded out the starting cast with 11 points.

Detroit started the game with back-to-back 3-pointers followed by a Simon tip-in to open up a quick 8-0 lead over the Falcons.

Joe Jakubowski got the Bowling Green offensive going with a triple out of the first media timeout, and Dee Brown got in a groove shortly after ending the first half with 11 points. Brown put up 11 more points in the second half to post a game-high 22 points.

McCallum dialed in from long distance against the Falcon 2-3 zone in the first 20 minutes of play. The freshman hit 3-of-4 from three point land to lead Detroit with nine points at the break. Simon once again got off to a hot start with seven quick points, and Holman did his part with seven points and six rebounds. Detroit shot 44 percent from the floor, including 41 percent from behind the arc to take a 31-24 lead into the half.

Minnerath helped the Titans get going in the second half. The junior got in the lane for a quick two points and followed that effort with an old fashion three point play to extend the Titan lead. LaMarcus Lowe (Flint, MI, Northwestern (Western Michigan) also got involved early in the second half with four quick points.

Holman provided the Titan fans with back-to-back dunks just over midway through the second half. Simon then hit a three pointer from the wing that pushed the lead to 18.

The Falcons picked up their defensive intensity and cut the lead to 54-44 with just over six minutes remaining. With the game on the line Detroit attacked the basket and secured their win from the free throw line.

The final day of the 2010 Legends Classic Sub-Regional will feature your Titans playing against the Niagara Purple Eagles at 5:30 p.m. Bowling Green and Albany will start the day with a 3:00 p.m. start.

Game Notes: Detroit honored Titan great Earl Cureton during a timeout in the first half… Cureton is a 2007 UDM Hall of Fame honoree… The 12-year pro was drafted in the third round of the 1979 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers… The Titans are undefeated at Calihan Hall.
