DETROIT— The University of Detroit Mercy will recognize the 25th anniversary of one of the program's biggest wins— the Feb. 28, 1985 men's basketball win over then-No. 4 Memphis State. That '84-85 squad played to a packed Calihan Hall crowd and did not disappoint, pulling out a 71-66 win in the regular season finale. The team will be honored on Dec. 4 in UDM's conference opener against Wright State.
Members and staff from that 1985 team will be invited back to Detroit to relive one of the biggest upsets in school history. Greg Wendt had 23 points while Keith Gray added 21 and Brian Humes chipped-in 13 for the Titans, giving the Tigers just their third defeat all season. Detroit held the Tigers' all-time leading scorer Keith Lee to just 5-of-18 shooting. That 1984-85 Memphis State team would win the Metro Conference and rack-up a 31-4 record en route to the NCAA Final Four.
At the season's end, Gray would earn his second straight All-Midwestern Collegiate Conference accolade and joined Wendt on the all-conference squad. Gray would later be selected in the seventh round of the 1985 NBA Draft by the Washington Bullets.
Former Head Coach Don Sicko, who spent six seasons on the sidelines at Detroit, will be honored along with his staff. Assistant Coach Charlie Coles (now the Head Coach at Miami, Ohio), Assistant Coach Rob Flaska (now Assistant Coach at Texas State), the late Assistant Coach Frank Marino and Head Athletic Trainer Tom Mackowiak (now Athletic Trainer at Michigan State).
A pre-game reception is planned in the Titan Club Room for the returnees as well as Titan Club Members. The game, which will air live on FOX Sports Detroit, tips at noon on Dec. 4. Tune in at 11:30 a.m. for the newest edition of the "Detroit Titan Court Report" on FSD.
