DETROIT-- Sophomore
Jason Calliste had eight three-point buckets as host Detroit cruised to a 101-61 win over Lake Superior State University Saturday afternoon at Calihan Hall.
Ray McCallum added five triples of his own as Detroit hit over half of its attempts from distance in the win.
The Detroit offense clicked on all cylinders-- especially in the second half-- as the Titans posted 62 points after the break. UDM hit on 11-of-16 shots from three-point range in the final 20 minutes, helping the Titans pull away after a 39-25 lead going into the locker room at halftime.
The second-half hot shooting started with McCallum, who collected three triples in a minute-and-a-half span, then Calliste followed with treys on back-to-back trips and added another a minute later as the Titans scored 22 points in the first 5:08 of the second stanza.
Calliste's effort came on just a dozen shots from beyond the arc. He hit his first two threes early in the game and was 3-of-6 at the break. He then went on to bury 5-of-6 in the second half to roll-up his game-high 34 points. McCallum was equally impressive, as he also hit 5-of-6 from the three-point line for the game as the starting backcourt duo combined for 56 points and 13 assists with just five turnovers on 17-for-28 shooting (.607) from the floor.
The defense also shined in the victory with UDM picking-up 17 steals led by five from
Donavan Foster in his 22 minutes of action. Four Titans were in double figures scoring: Calliste (34), McCallum (22),
Eli Holman (13) and
Chase Simon (11).
Three Lakers were in double digits led by Khalid Wells' 13 points off-the-bench.
The exhibition marks the final preseason game for the Titans. UDM will travel to New Mexico next Saturday to battle the Lobos in their newly-renovated facility, the Pit, a 9:30 p.m. Eastern start.
