YPSILANTI, Mich.- Detroit outlasted host Eastern Michigan in a hard-fought 68-65 overtime win at the Convocation Center on Saturday afternoon. EMU (1-8) rallied from an 11-point second-half deficit, tying it with three seconds left. The Titans (6-5) overcame a 7-for-19 clip from the free throw line in the extra session to post their first road win of the season.
The defenses dictated the game throughout as both teams struggled from the floor. After the first half, both teams were identical 7-for-31 (22.6 percent) in field goal percentage and 1-of-7 from three-point range. UDM was able to take care of the basketball, only turning it over 12 times the entire game while grabbing a dozen steals in the process.
Detroit had a six-point lead at the break and looked primed to build its advantage in the second stanza. The Titans would manage just one field goal in a six-minute stretch and Eastern took advantage by trimming the lead down to three.
A jump hook by
Eli Holman had the Titans on top by seven with two-and-a-half to play. From there, EMU's Derek Thompson took the Eagles on an improbable rally. Eastern was 2-of-16 from distance until Thompson hit from the right wing, then again from the top of the key to make it a one-possession game with 1:31 left. After EMU's Brandon Bowdry and
Ray McCallum each split a pair from the line, Thompson double-clutched a three with two defenders in his face and hit it with under 10 seconds remaining to knot the score at 55-apiece.
Donavan Foster had a three rim-out at the buzzer and the game went to overtime.
In the extra frame, Detroit had the opportunity to break the game wide open, but could not convert consistently from the free-throw line. The Titans missed on their first four freebies and let the Eagles hang around. McCallum would get 11 opportunities from the charity stripe in the overtime period, scoring nine of his career-high 31 points. It would be three big blocks from
LaMarcus Lowe in overtime-- part of his career-high eight-- that would prove to be key in grabbing the win.
Eastern had another look at a potential game-tying three in the closing seconds, but Lowe got his right hand on a deep Thompson attempt and McCallum grabbed the board, one of his career-high eight, to seemingly seal the win. But, he missed a pair of free throws and Detroit had to sweat-out a Darrell Lampley three-ball try in the final seconds to earn the win.
McCallum finished with career highs in points (31), rebounds (8) and steals (4). Foster added 12 points, four assists and four steals while Lowe chipped-in six points to go along with his 10 rebounds and career-best eight blocked shots. Brandon Bowdry led the Eagles with 31 points and 19 rebounds.
Detroit will face another MAC foe next weekend, traveling to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to take on the Chippewas of Central Michigan. The game will be televised on ESPNU at 7:00 p.m. next Saturday.
