ON TAP
Detroit returns home after a 2-2 roadswing through Michigan and Illinois. Losses to Western Michigan and Bradley book-ended wins over Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan. The Titans will be playing in front of the home faithful for the first time since a spirited 78-69 win over Wright State on Dec. 4 in the Horizon League opener for both schools.
ABOUT GREEN BAY
The Phoenix are 6-7 on the year, but have won each of their past two contests. Green Bay bested North Dakota 72-68 to snap a four-game skid and followed that with a 68-62 win at Wyoming on Dec. 22. Leading scorer Rahmon Fletcher pours-in 17.3 points per game, the third-leading scorer in the Horizon League.
WHO'S NEXT?
Detroit welcomes Milwaukee to Calihan Hall on Saturday afternoon in a New Year's Day matinee affair. The Panthers carry a 6-7, 1-1 record into the week and will play at Wright State on Thursday. UWM is led by Anthony Hill's 13.0 points per game.
NAIL-BITERS?
Detroit and Green Bay duked it out last season in three epic affairs. The Phoenix pulled out a pair of wins by a single bucket in the regular season series, but the Titans got the last laugh with a 62-53 win in the Horizon League tournament quarterfinals at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. Despite the close scores, the winner held the advantage for the majority in all three contests with just eight lead changes in the three games combined.
BLAKE'S TAKE
Transfer
Chris Blake made his first appearance in the Titan red, coming off-the-bench at Bradley to score 11 points. Blake logged 22 minutes and will look to be a mainstay in the Detroit rotation moving forward. A threat from deep, Blake gives the Titans another perimeter presence heading into the second half of the season.
ON THE HORIZON
League members get back to conference play this week as Detroit hosts Green Bay and Milwaukee on Thursday and Saturday, respectively. Detroit is one of four HL squads that made it through the first week of Horizon games (week of Dec. 2) unscathed as the Titans bested Wright State, 78-69, back on Dec. 4. Butler has a win in its only HL contest while Cleveland State and Valparaiso are both 2-0 in league play.
ROAD WARRIOR
Junior
Nick Minnerath leads the Titans in free-throw percentage, hitting 33-of-40 freebies so far this season (.825). But, he's been especially proficient on the road, missing just twice from the line, going 13-of-15 for an .867 mark. He also leads the squad with a modest 3-for-7 clip from downtown (.429).
AMONG THE NATIONAL LEADERS
Several Titans have their names appear among the NCAA Division I leaders. Junior
Eli Holman has six double-doubles, which ranks 14th heading into the week of Dec. 20. He also is 11th in rebounds per game (10.8).
LaMarcus Lowe, on the strength of his career-best eight blocks on Dec. 11 at Eastern Michigan, is now 16th in the NCAA with his 2.8 blocks per game clip.
LEADING THE LEAGUE
Eli Holman leads the Horizon League in both offensive (3.9 rpg) and defensive (6.9 rpg) rebounds per game in the early going. He is also tops in field goal percentage, connecting on 61.8 percent of his shots (63-of-102) and is sixth in blocks (1.3 bpg) and 16th in scoring (12.9 ppg).
NCAA's TOP FRESHMEN
Ray McCallum is among the best rookies in all of NCAA Division I, scoring 15.3 points per game through his first 13 games. That total is ninth among freshmen in the country heading into the week of Dec. 20.
