NEW ORLEANS -- Back-to-back games in the city of New Orleans is up next for the Detroit women's basketball team as the red, white and blue get ready to play in the Big Easy Classic this weekend, hosted by Tulane University.
Detroit will open the tournament against Saint Joseph's on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. (EST), and will conclude the action on Sunday against the host Green Wave at 5:00 p.m. (EST).
Live stats will be available for both games, while a live webcast will be provided for Sunday's contest versus Tulane.
UDM, who enters the weekend at 3-2, will be well rested as it last played on Nov. 24. Sophomore
Demeisha Fambro leads the team in scoring at 13.6 points per game, while sophomore
Yar Shayok has scored in double digits in four-straight games and is now second on the squad in the points department at 11.2 ppg.
DETROIT VS. SAINT JOSEPH'S
This will be the first career match-up between the Detroit Titans and the Saint Joseph's Hawks.
ABOUT THE HAWKS
Like Detroit, Saint Joseph's won its first three games, but has dropped two in a row, the latest a 46-40 outcome at Lehigh on Wednesday. The Hawks offense is averaging 56.4 points per game, but they have been great on defense allowing just 48.8 points per contest.
Michelle Baker, a junior, is the only SJU player in double figures in scoring at 15.0 ppg. Another junior, Kelly Cavallo is tallying 9.0 ppg., and a team-best 8.6 rebounds, while junior Samira Van Grinsven is also a force under the basket with 8.4 points, 5.2 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game.
Last season, SJU was 17-15 and earned a bid to the WNIT.
DETROIT VS. TULANE
The Titans and Green Wave have squared off once before way back on Dec. 30, 1991 in New Orleans as UDM defeated Tulane, 68-61.
ABOUT THE GREEN WAVE
Tournament host Tulane opens the Big Easy Classic against Saint Joseph's on Friday. The Green Wave 5-1, including some impressive wins against SEC members Mississippi State and at LSU. The lone setback on the season was an 83-76 decision to Portland State last Saturday.
Tulane is the defending Conference USA champions as they return four starters and five letterwinners from a year ago. The Green Wave currently has five players in double figures led by sophomore Olivia Grayson's 15.5 points per game. She also leads the team in rebounding (7.0) and assists (4.2).
Senior Roshaunda Barnes is averaging 14.3 points, while senior Brittany Lindsey is tallying 11.8 ppg.
