ON TAP
Detroit will look to remain perfect in league play when it hosts Milwaukee on New Year's Day at 1 p.m. at Calihan Hall. The Titans are fresh off an impressive 79-56 rout of Green Bay on Thursday, a game that featured five different UDM players in double figures. Milwaukee dropped a 68-44 contest Thursday at Wright State to fall to 1-2 in Horizon League play.
ABOUT MILWAUKEE
The Panthers are 6-8 overall and 1-2 in league play this season. Three players carry double-digit point averages, led by Anthony Hill's 12.5 clip. Milwaukee is 2-4 on the road this season with wins at Niagara and South Dakota State.
WHO'S NEXT?
Detroit heads to the Windy City next week for games at Loyola and at UIC on Jan. 6 and 8, respectively. The Titans will then return home for a much-anticipated battle with Butler on the 14th and a date with Valparaiso in televised contests.
McCALLUM CUBED
It's been a family atmosphere at Detroit with head coach
Ray McCallum and freshman son, Ray. They'll add one more to the mix Saturday when Ja'Rob McCallum comes to Calihan Hall with his Panthers. The sophomore is the nephew of Coach McCallum and is Ray Michael's cousin.
FREE FOR ALL
Detroit made all 13 of its free throw tries in the second half of Thursday's win en route to an impressive 23-of-26 effort for the game.
Ray McCallum made all six of his attempts while
Nick Minnerath (4-4) and
Chris Blake (3-3) were also perfect. Minnerath leads the team with his .841 clip.
BLAKE MAKES GOOD ON CHANCES
Transfer
Chris Blake has scored 24 points combined in his two games in a Titan uniform. Eligible after the first semester, Blake has made good on his 20 minutes per game by scoring 11 at Bradley and 13 in the win against Green Bay Thursday. Blake is 9-of-18 from the floor thus far, including a 2-for-5 clip from deep.
HOME COOKING
The Titans have enjoyed a 6-1 record at home thus far this season and have shot the ball well at Calihan Hall. Over those seven games, Detroit is shooting at a .492 clip at home, much better than the .403 percentage wearing the road uniforms.
MINNERATH'S WRATH
Junior
Nick Minnerath played inspired basketball Thursday, swatting away a career-high four shots and finishing several dunks in Detroit's win against Green Bay. Minnerath also connected all four of his free-throw attempts to push his season average to .841 (37 of 44). The junior was perfect from the line in December, going 10-for-10. He has a current string of 14 straight free throw makes, dating back to the win over Niagara (Nov. 28).
AMONG THE NATIONAL LEADERS
Several Titans have their names appear among the NCAA Division I leaders. Junior
Eli Holman has six double-doubles, which ranks 14th heading into the week of Dec. 20. He also is 11th in rebounds per game (10.8).
LaMarcus Lowe, on the strength of his career-best eight blocks on Dec. 11 at Eastern Michigan, is now 16th in the NCAA with his 2.8 blocks per game clip.
LEADING THE LEAGUE
Eli Holman leads the Horizon League in both offensive (3.6 rpg) and defensive (7.1 rpg) rebounds per game heading into the new year. He is also tops in field goal percentage, connecting on 61.5 percent of his shots (67-of-109) and is sixth in blocks (1.4 bpg) and 15th in scoring (12.9 ppg).
NCAA's TOP FRESHMEN
Ray McCallum is among the best rookies in all of NCAA Division I, scoring 15.3 points per game through his first 13 games. That total is ninth among freshmen in the country heading into the week of Dec. 20.
