KALAMAZOO, Mich.—  The Titans dropped a tight 71-69 contest to host Western Michigan Wednesday night at University Arena in non-conference action.  UDM evened its record at 5-5 overall on the season with the loss while WMU improved to 3-4.

Detroit had a chance to tie or win the game in the final seconds but could not get a shot off after an in-bounds play underneath.  WMU escaped with the win and had five scorers in double figures in a balanced attack.

Freshman Ray McCallum led all scorers with 19 points.  Chase Simon added 18 for Detroit.

The home team led by as many as 11 and shot 54.5 percent from the floor in the opening half, but the Titans rallied in the closing minute to make it a 33-27 score at the break.  The Broncos kept the momentum by scoring the first six points of the second stanza, but the Titans roared back with 10 straight to cut the deficit to a bucket, 39-37.    A McCallum triple eventually brought the Titans all the way back, knotting the score at 48-apiece.

WMU would stretch the lead back to nine and the Titans had to again whittle away at the lead.  Simon failed to convert on a pair of intentional-foul free throws but scored a bucket on the possession and LaMarcus Lowe threw down a dunk to get it to 66-62.  Detroit would again tie it as Eli Holman mopped-up a miss with a two-hand jam a followed by Simon hitting a runner in the lane and it was all-square with two mintes left.

With under a minute to go, a three-point play by Jason Calliste sliced it again to two points and the Detroit defense caused a turnover on the ensuing trip to set-up the nerve-wracking final seconds.  McCallum had his shot blocked with four seconds left then the Titans could not get a look at the rim as the horn sounded.

Detroit dropped its fourth straight road game with the loss.

UDM continues its four-game road swing Saturday when it makes the short trek to Ypsilanti, Mich. for a battle with the Eastern Michigan Eagles.  Tip time is 2:00 p.m.

Notes:
Detroit has used the same starting lineup in all 10 games this season ... Lowe, a former Bronco (2008-09), tied a season-high with 12 points off the bench ... He has now registered a block in nine of 10 games this season and has at least two in each of the last five contests ... Holman, who is the team's leading scorer, was held off the scoresheet in the first half, going 0-for-3 ... Holman's first bucket came on a putback with 13:25 left in the second half ... McCallum had four rebounds and has recorded at least four in every game as a freshman.
