Detroit sophomore forward
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) has been named National Jesuit Women's Basketball Player of the Week for her efforts on the court this past week as the Titans captured two victories to now stand alone at the top of the Horizon League.
“It is an honor to be receiving this recognition,” said Shayok. “This is not only a testament to how I performed last week, but it is also shows our efforts collectively as a team against nationally ranked Green Bay, as well as Milwaukee.”
Shayok helped lead Detroit to a 71-55 victory over visiting #23/22 Green Bay on Feb. 4, which gave the Titans sole possession of first place in the Horizon League. She collected her seventh double-double of the season as she pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds and scored 17 points in 40 minutes of action against the Phoenix. UDM went on to capture a 72-65 win over Milwaukee two days later to maintain first place in the conference where Shayok shot 5-of-6 from the field and ended with 13 points, as well as a team-high nine rebounds.
On the week, Shayok averaged a team-high 10.5 rebounds per game, ended second among her teammates in scoring average (15.0 ppg) and shot 77 percent from the field (13-of-17).
The Jesuit Basketball Spotlight project is a nationwide effort to identify basketball games between Jesuit schools during the 2009-10 season and, through those games, bring greater positive awareness to Jesuit education and mission. This project was developed by the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) in response to member institutions wanting to spread the word of Jesuit higher education through the more than 90 basketball games in which Jesuit institutions play each other (men and women) this season.
The Titans (11-11, 9-2 HL) return to action on Thursday, Feb. 11 where they will be looking to extend its winning streak as UDM faces Loyola in Chicago, IL, at 8 p.m.
