Junior sprinter
Earnest Cleary (Detroit, MI/Ferndale) won the 60 meter dash in record fashion, and senior thrower
Brittany Horne (Okemos, MI/Okemos) recorded her second top three finish of the weekend, as the UDM men’s and women’s track teams finished fourth and seventh, respectively, at the 2010 Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by UDM in Ann Arbor.
For the second straight season, Milwaukee ended atop the Horizon League on both men’s and women’s sides. Milwaukee’s men scored 177 points, followed by Butler in second (100), Youngstown State (67), Detroit (63), Loyola (57), UIC (45) and Valparaiso (17). In the women’s competition, Milwaukee won with 174 points, followed by Butler (103), Loyola (75), Wright State (66), Youngstown State (45), UIC (41), Detroit (21) and Valparaiso (2).
The Titans men’s sprinters led the way for Detroit on Sunday. In the 60 meter dash, Cleary and sophomore
Vushaun Landrum (Windsor, ON/Sandwich Secondary) ran away from the field to take the top two spots. Cleary set a new Horizon League Championships record with a clocking of 6.89 seconds, .01 seconds under the previous record, and Landrum was right on his heels with a time of 6.92. Senior
Deonte Osayande (Detroit, MI/Winans Academy) made it a trio of Titans earning team points in the event, taking fifth place in 7.06 seconds.
Landrum came back later in the afternoon to run 22.48 seconds in the 200 meter dash, good for fourth place.
Horne was again at the forefront the Titans women’s efforts, placing third in the shot put with a distance of 42 feet, 8.25 inches.
Rookie hurdlers
Vincent Lefler (Midland, MI/Midland) and
Derek Baker (Carleton, MI/Airport) both scored points for the Titans, finishing 4-5 in the 60 meter hurdles. Lefler posted a time of 8.48 seconds and Baker finished in 8.89.
Junior
Lesley Hanna (Exuma, Bahamas/Coakley) also notched a fourth-place finish for the UDM by clearing a height of 6 feet, 4.25 inches in men’s high jump. Freshman teammate
Jeffrey Senecal (North Baltimore, OH/North Baltimore) cleared the bar at 6’ 0.5”, earning sixth place. Hanna also competed in the 400 meter final, having posted the fastest time in qualifying, but was disqualified in the race and wound being scratched from the 200 meter dash final due to a sore hamstring.
Senior
Alex Gould (Comstock Park, MI/Comstock Park) was yet another fourth-place finisher for Detroit, clocking 1:56.70 in the 800 meter run. In the 3,000 meter run, junior
Pat Liederbach (Petoskey, MI/Petoskey) followed up his third-place showing in Saturday’s 5,000 meter run with sixth-place finish in a time of 8:37.84.
Another pair of UDM freshmen,
Taylor Hennrick (Traverse City, MI/St. Francis) and
Anthony Donald (Waterville, OH/Anthony Wayne), were the first in action for the Titans Sunday morning for the final three events of the heptathlon. This was the first time the Titans have entered the men’s indoor heptathlon, and Hennrick earned Detroit its first team points in the event, moving his way up from 10th place at the end of yesterday’s competition to finish in sixth with 3,882 points, while Donald was right on his heels in seventh with 3,642 points.
In the women’s 400 meter race, senior
Megan Miller (Zanesville, OH/Zanesville) came across the line in 59.62 seconds to place sixth and earn team points for UDM. Meanwhile, seniors
Susan Kalkstein (New Kensington, PA/Burrell) and
Jennifer DaFauw (Harper Woods, MI/Grosse Pointe North) missed earning team points by fractions. Kalkstein came up just one-half inch short of sixth in the women’s triple jump, and DeFauw was less than one second from finishing in the top six in the women’s 800 meter run.
In the 4 x 400 meter relays, the Titans ran their way to a pair of fifth-place finishes. The women ran to a time of 4:05.97, while the men, who were slowed by a dropped baton, clocked in at 3:32.13.
