Match Report (in pdf)

Horizon League play began for Detroit's women's tennis team on Friday and the Titans walked away with a 5-2 victory over Wright State at the South Regency Tennis Center in Miamisburg, OH.

The Titans (2-9, 1-0 HL) had to rebound in singles competition after WSU (7-5, 0-1 HL) won the doubles point, which they did as UDM won at every singles position except for one. Freshman Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) claimed her first win at No. 1 as she won by scores of 7-6(4), 6-2 over Kenisha Webb to increase her dual record to 5-6, while sophomore Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) won by a score of 6-4 in both sets over Masha Peresetsky at No. 2 and now owns a 6-5 overall record in dual competition.

Senior Svetlana Flankova (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary 21) was tied with Amanda Albuquerque at No. 3 after two sets, but won the third by a score of 6-1 and junior Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI / Mattawan) had the same scenario at No. 4 and defeated Taylor Hines 6-1 in the third set. The final point for Detroit came from freshman Victoria Baca (Quito, Ecuador/El Sauce) as she played at No. 6 and claimed a 7-6(4), 4-6, 10-8 win over Jackie Garrett.

The Titans will return to the court on Saturday as they face Butler in Indianapolis at 5 p.m.
