The UDM men's golf team gets a chance to play at home this weekend when it hosts the 2010 Detroit Titans Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Prestwick Village Golf Club.
Prestwick Village is a beautiful private club in nearby Highland and 13 other schools – Canisius, Cleveland State, Dayton, Duquesne, Green Bay, Humber, IPFW, Loyola College (MD), Loyola University (IL), Oakland, Valparaiso, Wright State, Youngstown State – will come to town to challenge the Titans during the two-day tournament.
PVGC boasts a 7,142-yard, par-72 championship layout which has hosted numerous events for the USGA, Golf Association of Michigan and PGA of Michigan. The college teams will play 36 holes on Friday then 18 more on Saturday, with 8:30 shotgun starts planned for both days.
Loyola College is the defending tournament team champion while the Titans' David Byrne (Essex, ON/Essex) is the defending individual medalist.
All nine UDM men's golfers will see action in the home tournament this weekend led by Byrne, a three-time All-Horizon League golfer who entered the week pacing the team with a 72.8 stroke average. Junior Britt Pronk (London, ON/St. Thomas Aquinas) is next in line for the Titans at 74.1. Junior Jeff Clarridge (Barrie, ON/Bear Creek) and freshmen Simon Reyers (Kingston, ON/Holy Cross) and Sheldon Keyte (Portage, MI/Hackett) will round out the Detroit starting five this weekend.
Spectators are welcome for the tournament and there is no admission charge. DetroitTitans.com will provide complete tournament wrap-ups after each day of competition.
The Titans warmed up for the Invitational on Wednesday by traveling to Notre Dame to take on the Fighting Irish in a dual match at UND's Warren Golf Club. Notre Dame prevailed in "The Battle At The Warren" by six shots, edging Detroit, 292 to 298. Pronk led the Titans with a round of 71.
