One of the biggest signings in Detroit basketball history took place yesterday as All-American high school point guard
Ray McCallum – UDM head coach
Ray McCallum's son – announced his intentions to join the Titans in a nationally-televised press conference on ESPNU. The signing was made official this morning as his National Letter of Intent was received by the University.
The 6-1 McCallum has played the last two seasons at Country Day High School in suburban Birmingham, joining that team after his father was hired as UDM's head coach. The younger McCallum was named to the McDonald's and Parade All-American Teams for 2010 after an outstanding senior season in which he led his team to the State Class B Championship.
He chose to sign with the Titans after also paying official visits to Arizona, Florida, Oklahoma and UCLA.
“Coming into the process, I was looking for schools that I can come in and play my game and help contribute as much as possible. I took visits to all four schools, really enjoyed the process, and everything the schools had to offer," said McCallum Jr.
"I want to say a special thanks to my dad for supporting myself through the whole process, just being a regular parent and not pressuring me in any way. At the end of the day, I decided that I will be staying home,” announced the the No. 17 recruit in the nation according to ESPN on national television while holding up a Titan jersey.
McCallum – who played for Bloomington (IN) North his first two varsity seasons while his father was on the coaching staff at Indiana – averaged 22.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists as a senior. He was named to the Detroit Free Press' and Detroit News' All-State Dream Teams and was honored as Class B Player of the Year. He also finished third in the balloting for Michigan's Mr. Basketball. McCallum was outstanding in the Yellowjackets' state championship game victory against Lansing Sexton as he scored 25 of his 32 points in the first half to help his team build an insurmountable lead.
When young McCallum arrived at Country Day, he played with four seniors who went on to sign letters of intent with Division I schools. This year, according to DCD coach Kurt Keener, McCallum took charge of the team.
“Ray deferred a lot last year because he had a team dominated by seniors,” coach Keener told the Free Press. “This year it was his team and he was the leader. He took control of the team.”
McCallum is the fifth new student-athlete to align himself with the Titans this year, joining two junior college players who also signed Wednesday – 6-8 forward
Nick Minnerath (Truro, MA/Jackson (MI) Community College) and guard
Chris Blake (Mobile, AL/Trinity Valley (TX) Community College) – as well as
Jordan Manuel (Indianapolis, IN/Howe) and
Frank Williams (Raytown, MO/South), who inked their letters of intent with UDM in the fall.
