On the prowl for the first conference championship in school history, the third-seeded Detroit Titans women's tennis team will face the sixth-seeded Green Bay Phoenix on Friday in the first round of the Horizon League Championships, held at North Central High School in Indianapolis. The contest will begin at 1:00 p.m.
A second half surge by the Titans has put them in the top tier of the conference as the red, white and blue were 6-2 in the HL and 8-11 overall. Detroit won 7-of-9 matches down the stretch, including three sweeps.
The Titans will have
Carolina Salas Espinosa as their top netter after the rookie went 7-6 in the top spot and 6-2 in conference play. Sophomore
Amanda Cornwell will be at No. 2 after a near perfect conference slate at 7-1. Sophomore
Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom will play at three, senior
Svetlana Flankova at the four and junior
Erin Weldon in the fifth spot giving the Titans three seasoned veterans who helped the team finish runner-up at last year's tournament. Sophomore
Melanie Capuano will hold the sixth position with seven singles wins to her credit and a 3-3 mark in league matches.
Doubles will see the tandem of Cornwell and Espinosa at No. 1. That duo won 13 times on the season, while at No. 2, Flankova and Sjoberg-Sundstrom were a perfect 6-0 in the conference on the season and 7-0 in matches at the two slot. Capuano and Weldon will be at three after posting six triumphs on the season and three in conference play.
UIC has won the league 13 straight years, which includes a 4-1 contest against UDM last year. Friday will also see the conference accolades announced at the annual awards banquet following the first two matches of the tournament.
A Detroit victory in round one will see the Titans play the second seed Vikings of Cleveland State on Saturday.
