Titan Freshman Tabbed HL Newcomer of the Year

Freshman Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) was named the Horizon League Newcomer of the Year and sophomore Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) earned second team All-Horizon League accolades as the HL held its annual tennis banquet on Friday night.

Espinosa, who was also selected to the All-HL first team, went 14-12 in the regular season and 6-2 in conference play. Seven of her total wins were at No. 1 with another four at No. 2. She started the dual season as the Titan No. 2 netter, but quickly rose to the top spot anchoring Detroit's turnaround in the middle of the year.

Cornwell led the Titans on the year with 17 singles wins and was a near perfect 7-1 in league play. The first year Detroit student-athlete played at No. 2, 3 and 4 in singles on the season, but did her best work at No. 3 where she went 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

The Titan tandem of Espinosa and Cornwell also played together all year, for the most part at top doubles, posting another 14 victories which includes the Mastodon Invitational doubles flight title in the fall.

Espinosa is the third Titan to win Newcomer of the Year accolades following Annie Moore in 2006 and Titan Hall of Famer Maria Pandele in 1998. The awards mark the fourth straight year that a Titan was honored. The Titan pair also became the eighth and ninth netters in school history to receive all-conference accolades.

The Titans defeated Green Bay, 4-0, on Friday afternoon in the first round of the Horizon League Championships and will face Cleveland State on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
