Titans Blank Green Bay, 4-0, In First Round Of HL Championships

Box Score

For the second time this year, the Detroit Titans women's tennis team made quick work of Green Bay as UDM moved into the second round of the Horizon League Championships with a 4-0 win over the Phoenix on Friday afternoon.

The match was played indoors at the Butler Bubble as rain hit the Indianapolis area forcing day one of the competition inside.

The third-seeded Titans, who moved to 9-11 on the season, will now face the tournament's No. 2 seed in Cleveland State on Saturday. UDM was edged by CSU, 4-3, last weekend at home.

Detroit opened the contest securing the doubles point as senior Svetlana Flankova (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary 21) and sophomore Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom (Gothenburg, Sweden/Katrinelunds Gymnasiet) posted an 8-3 decision at No. 2, while junior Erin Weldon (Kalamazoo, MI/Mattawan) and freshman Melanie Capuano (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI/Grosse Pointe South) cruised to an 8-1 win at No. 3.

In singles, Flankova got the Titans started with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Lauryn Grimando at No. 4. Sjoberg-Sundstrom followed in the third spot with a 6-1, 7-5 victory, while the clincher came from sophomore Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) in the second position, 6-4, 7-6 (2).

UDM's second round match is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m., tomorrow.
