Tremendous Season Comes To An End For Titan Tennis

Box Score

A great season came to an end for the Detroit Titans women's tennis team as UIC was able to elude UDM's championship bid for the second straight year coming away with a 4-0 decision on Sunday afternoon.

UIC (20-3), who has now won 14-straight league titles, took an early advantage by winning the doubles point.

“They are a very good program and a good team and they deserved to win,” said head coach Sam Poole. “You can't make mistakes against them. I thought we were a little flat to start, but the energy picked up and we were fighting hard, but they really don't make any mistakes. ”

Detroit (10-12) tried to rebound in singles and was leading at the No. 3 and 5 positions, but the Flames were too strong and would take three other matches for the win.

At No. 1, freshman and HL Newcomer and first team All-Horizon League selection Carolina Salas Espinosa (Monterrey, Mexico/Preparatoria No. 7) toughed it out but fell 6-3, 6-2 to the Player of the Year Mariya Kovaleva.

Second Team All-HL honoree sophomore Amanda Cornwell (Waterford, MI/Kettering) was downed, 6-0, 6-2, in the second spot, while freshman Melanie Capuano (Grosse Pointe Farms, MI/Grosse Pointe South) was defeated at six, 6-1, 6-2.

“I knew it was going to be hard coming out with the energy and emotion on the third straight day, especially with the way we played against Cleveland State, but we did work hard out there and never gave up and that is what I want to see from them,” added Poole.

Detroit's season might have come to a close, but only one senior will depart from the roster in Svetlana Flankova (Riga, Latvia/Riga Secondary 21), who leaves UDM among the leaders in singles and doubles victories.
