2010 Men's Soccer Schedule

Opening up Michigan's new soccer stadium and seven home games highlight the Titan men's soccer schedule for 2010, announced today by new head coach Nick Deren.

After the annual Alumni game on August 21 and two home exhibition games against Schoolcraft (24th) and IUPUI (28th), the Titans will open the season on Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 7:30 p.m., as Detroit will look to upset Michigan in the first men's game at the new U-M Soccer Stadium. Last year, the red, white and blue led the Wolverines 1-0 at the half before the home team rallied for three goals in the second for the win.

“It will be exciting and a great experience for our guys to go and open up Michigan's new place,” said Deren, who begins his first full season at the helm of the Titan program after taking over on an interim basis last year and leading the team to a 4-4 mark.

Detroit will stay road bound for its next three against BIG EAST member Cincinnati (Sept. 5) and two games in a tournament that still to be determined for the weekend of Sept. 12-14.

UDM's home opener will be on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at 4:00 p.m. on Titan Field, as it looks to make it two in a row over regional rival Bowling Green following last year's 3-2 overtime thriller on the road.

“We have a tough non-conference schedule which I believe will help us prep for league play,” said Deren. “We open up with two quality opponents on the road and really, our first six games will test us and show us where we are before the HL season begins.”

The rest of the month of September sees Detroit back on the road at Duquesne (18th) and then the opening of Horizon League play in Chicago versus Loyola (24th) and UIC (26th).

The October docket has the Titans at home for five games starting with the first weekend of the month when Milwaukee and defending HL tournament champion Green Bay invade the Motor City on the first and third, respectively. Detroit will also host conference rivals Cleveland State (15th) and last year's HL regular season champion Butler (30th) along with an out of league contest against IPFW (17th). The road portion of October will have UDM at Western Michigan (6th), Wright State (10th) and Buffalo (26th).

The last two games of the regular season will take place in November with Detroit hosting in-state rival Oakland (3rd) before closing out the year at Valparaiso (6th).

“The Horizon League will be a battle once again,” said Deren. “There is no easy game in the conference. Butler and Green Bay will be the favorites again, but I see improvements in every team and on any given day any team can win so it should be another exciting year.”

Once again, the Horizon League tournament will have the top six teams from the regular season advance with the top two seeds receiving byes in the quarter-finals. The quarter-finals are slated for Tuesday, Nov. 9, with the No. 3 and 4 teams hosting a game. The semi-finals and finals will occur on the 12th and 14th, respectively, all at the site of the No. 1 seeded team.
