Titans Still On The Course As Storms Halt Play At Central Regional

Brian Sparks blogs from Notre Dame

Thunderstorms rumbled through the South Bend area Friday afternoon, suspending play and leaving the Horizon League champion Titans among 11 teams which were unable to finish their second rounds at the NCAA men's golf Central Regional.

Following a delay of three-plus hours as rain saturated Notre Dame's Warren Golf Club, the competition was suspended until 8:00 Saturday morning. The golfers who didn't finish play Friday will return to their spots on the course to complete Round Two, and the final 18 holes of the tournament will begin immediately afterwards.

With anywhere from three to seven holes remaining for their team members, the Titans still find themselves locked in a dogfight with Ohio Valley Conference champion Murray State for 12th place on the leader board. The teams were tied for 12th after Thursday's first round, and were still deadlocked for that position when play was halted. Top-seeded Stanford holds a five-stroke lead over No. 3 Florida State in the battle for the top spot.

Senior David Byrne (Essex, ON/Essex), the 2010 Horizon League Player of the Year, led Detroit's efforts on Friday. Byrne put together two birdies and three bogeys to stand one-over on the day through 14 holes. The Titans' second All-Horizon Leaguer, junior Britt Pronk (London, ON/St. Thomas Aquinas), was two-over after 12.

Golfstat.com will attempt to resume live scoring for Saturday's rounds after experiencing technical issues due to overwhelming traffic on its web site as six men's Regionals and the women's national championship were all being contested on Friday.
