Titans Golf Joins Exclusive Division-I Club

Golfstat Live Scoring

When NCAA Division I post-season play unfolds this week, the Titan golf program will find itself a member of a pretty unique club.

Detroit, as it turns out, is one of just five D-I schools where both its men's and women's teams won 2010 conference championships and moved on to the NCAA Regionals. The others are Jackson State (SWAC), Kent State (MAC), Murray State (Ohio Valley) and Oral Roberts (Summit).

The Titans, of course, grabbed both 2010 Horizon League titles. The women won their first league crown ever and the men claimed a record seventh title, combining for the first golf championship sweep in HL history.

“I think it's pretty special,” said UDM director of golf Mark Engel, who is in his 20th season as the men's team head coach. “Both of our teams work hard and they obviously peaked at the right time last week at Kearney Hill Links (site of the HL Championships in Lexington, KY). I know our players will do everything they can to represent UDM well at the Regionals.”

Women's play begins this week, with the Titans assigned to the NCAA Central Regional at Columbus, IN. Detroit will head to the tee for Thursday's first round at 1:25 p.m. Golfstat will provide live scoring throughout the 54-hole tournament.

Detroit is led by a pair of two-time All-Horizon League golfers in junior Alainna Stefan (Dearborn, MI/Mercy), the 2010 Horizon League individual medalist, and senior Rachel McHenry (Livonia, MI/Stevenson).

The Titan men, meanwhile, will be working on their games this week while waiting for the May 10 announcement of which Regional they'll be heading to. Men's Regional play actually begins May 20.

Detroit is led by Horizon League Player of the Year David Byrne (Essex, ON/Essex) and junior teammate Britt Pronk (London, ON/St. Thomas Aquinas), UDM's second All-League honoree for 2010.

DetroitTitans.com will provide daily updates on both teams' progress in Regional play.
