The major amateur golf tournament season heats up in earnest during the coming weeks and UDM will be represented heavily on both sides of the Can-Am border.
David Byrne (Essex, ON/Essex) – the 2010 Horizon League Player of the Year and a May UDM grad – leads seven players with Titan ties into the Ontario Men's Match Play Championship, which begins Tuesday at the Lake Joseph Club in Port Carling, ON. Considering the fact Byrne has won the championship three straight years, he obviously has a target on his back entering Tuesday's first matches.
Among those taking aim at Byrne are three teammates who also represented UDM at the recent NCAA Central Regional at Notre Dame – fellow All-Horizon League honoree Britt Pronk (London, ON/St. Thomas Aquinas), who just completed his junior season, classmate Jeff Clarridge (Barrie, ON/Bear Creek) and Simon Reyers (Kingston, ON/Holy Cross) – as well as Mark Hicks (Niagara-On-The-Lake, ON/Niagara) and incoming freshman Brendan Leonard (Cambridge, ON/St. Benedict).
The tournament runs through the championship match which is scheduled for Friday. Match-by-match results will be made available by the Golf Association of Ontario at its web site.
Not too much later, 2010 UDM graduate Brian Sparks (Shelby Township, MI/Lutheran North) and sophomore-to-be Sheldon Keyte (Portage, MI/Hackett) will tee it up at the 99th Michigan Amateur Championship. The tournament will be contested June 22-26 at Oakhurst Golf & Country Club in Clarkston. Complete scoring will be made available by the Golf Association of Michigan.
