Titans Sign Three-Time State Champion, Class D Player Of The Year Evan Bruinsma

The Detroit men's basketball team continues to stockpile talent for next season as head coach Ray McCallum announced that the Titans have signed 6-7 Michigan Class D Player of the Year Evan Bruinsma to a National Letter of Intent.

“He is a winner and a great student-athlete and you are always looking to add that kind of talent to your team,” said McCallum. “He has improved every year and took his game to a new level as a senior.”

Bruinsma, from Western Michigan Christian High School, recently led the Warriors to their third straight Class D state championship and did so in impressive fashion, ending the title game with 25 points, 20 rebounds, five blocks and three steals. The three straight state titles was the first for a Western Michigan based school in 75 years.

His Player of the Year award was a unanimous decision by an 11-member Associated Press All-State panel and he was also named first team all-state by the AP as well as by the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News.

“He is very versatile and can fill a few different rolls on our team,” said McCallum. “He will need to learn to play a bit closer to the basket, but he can also do a lot of everything and we are excited to have him join us.”

Bruinsma scored over 1,000 points in his high school career and ended his senior season averaging 21.6 points, 10.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. He also earned Meijer Scholar Athlete of the Week accolades for his state title game performance and was named to the Basketball Coaches of Michigan's Academic all-state team as a junior with a 3.74 GPA. He was also a two-time all-state performer in soccer where he helped lead WMC to a state champion as a sophomore.

The Michigan product becomes the fourth signee in the spring joining All-American Ray McCallum (Beverly Hills, MI/Detroit Country Day) and a pair of junior college All-Americans in forward Nick Minnerath (Truro, MA/Jackson (MI) Community College) and guard Chris Blake (Mobile, AL/Trinity Valley (TX) Community College).
