The accolades keep coming in for coach Ray McCallum and the UDM men's basketball staff for their 2010 recruiting efforts. This time, ESPN.com has recognized the Titans for their outstanding group of new signees.
The web site did separate recruiting wrap-ups on what it called the six “power conferences” (ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10 and SEC), then put the Titans atop “The Best of the Rest.”
“Many schools not in the power conferences also had tremendous recruiting classes,” the story's author, Michael LaPlante, noted.
He cited the Titans for landing All-American guard Ray McCallum (Beverly Hills, MI/Detroit Country Day), the coach's son who is ranked 17th nationally by ESPN, as well as four other solid players. Also on their way to Titan Territory are a pair of junior college All-Americans in forward Nick Minnerath (Truro, MA/Jackson [MI] Community College) and guard Chris Blake (Mobile, AL/Trinity Valley [TX] Community College) as well as high school standouts Evan Bruinsma (New Era, MI/Western Michigan Christian) and Frank Williams (Raytown, MO/South).
The 2010 Titans posted the best turnaround in school history, improving by 13 victories over 2008-09 to finish with a 20-14 record. Among the veterans of that team still on hand are All-Horizon League guard Chase Simon, who led the way in scoring with a 14.0 average, as well as center Eli Holman, who joined Simon on the conference's All-Newcomer Team a year ago.
