Women’s Basketball Adds SJU Transfer Murphy

Britney Murphy has decided to return to the State of Michigan to play for the Detroit Titans women's basketball team. The Saginaw native comes to UDM after transferring from St. John's University.

The 5-6 point guard was a key reserve for the Red Storm as a freshman during the 2008-09 season. She played in all 34 games that year and averaged 17.6 minutes per contest. Murphy averaged 2.7 points, 1.3 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game.

“Britney transferred from St. John's University at the end of the semester,” said head coach Autumn Rademacher. “Her Big East ability and intensity raised the level of competition in practice immediately."

Murphy has all the tools to be a weapon in the Titan backcourt. She was second on the team in assists at SJU with 55, and she showed her ability to knock down shots from the perimeter by hitting 13 3-pointers on the year.

“Britney is an excellent ball handler, can penetrate to the basket, has outstanding court awareness and has a solid perimeter shot,” Rademacher added. “She is also an extremely aggressive defender. We are looking forward to the moment Britney steps out onto the court in a Detroit Titan uniform.”

Additional highlights from Murphy's freshman season include dishing out a team-high six assists against Dartmouth, and grabbing a career-high five rebounds against Harvard. Her best game offensively came in the third round of the WNIT against Boston College. Murphy finished the game with 13 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field against the Eagles. She was 3-of-6 from behind the arc.

Before attending St. John's University, Murphy played high school basketball at Saginaw Arthur Hill. She was a four-year letterwinner, and a three-year starter at the point guard position. Murphy averaged 10.7 points, 4.0 assists, and 2.4 steals during her career as a Lumberjack. She helped lead her team to three final four appearances.

Murphy earned multiple post-season awards after averaging 16.0 points, 5.0 assists, and 3.6 steals her senior season. She was a Saginaw Valley Dream Team honoree and a McDonald's All-American nominee in 2008. Murphy held all-state honors, and was named conference MVP during her senior season.
